THE MAGELLAN EXPEDITION

AT LIMASAWA
Prepared by: Ajos, Balagot, Ranido, Lumabo, Paimalan, Suello
On Thursday morning, March twenty-eight, as we had
seen fire on an island the night before, we anchored
near it.
We saw a small boat approaching the flagship with natives in it called boloto.
The captain-general’s slave spoke to them and seeing that they would not
trust us, captain-general threw them out a red cap and other things tied to
the wood.
They received them very gladly and went away to notify their king.
Two hours later, we saw two large boats, balanghai, and they were
full of men and their king was in the larger of them.
When the king came near the flagship, the slave spoke to
him. The king understood him and ordered some of his men
to enter the ships.
The captain-general showed great honor to the men who entered
the ship and gave them some presents.
Next day, the captain-general sent his slave to the king to ask for
food.
The king came with six or eight men and entered the ship. He
embraced the captain-general.
The captain-general gave the king a garment of red and yellow
cloth made in Turkish fashion.
The captain-general sent us to go with the king. When I reached
the shore, the king raised his hands towards the sky.
The king brought in some food. Before the supper hour I gave the king many things
which I had brought. For I could not help myself, I wrote down the names of many
things in their language and when they saw me writing, they were astonished.
After, which we went to the palace of the king which was built like
a hayloft and was thatched with banana and palm leaves.
The king made us sit down there on a bamboo mat with our feet
drawn up like tailors.
The king made us a sign that he was going to sleep.
When day dawned, the king came and took me by the hand. Before
we left, the king kissed our hands with great joy, and we his.
The finest looking man among those people, the owner
of the island of Butuan and Calagan
