Barclays fined 290 million pounds
in 2012

BARCLAYS AND BOB DIAMOND
 2008 financial crisis, banks bailed by governments (therefore, by taxpayers) to stay afloat
 When Diamond became Barclays CEO in 2010, he used “good citizenship” as a theme of his leadership
 “Good citizenship” means, according to Diamond, to strictly enforce regulations
 LIBOR rate scandal surfaced in 2012
 Barclays executives implicated in scandal
 Public believe that excess bonuses drove banks to tolerate irregularities
 Diamond was head of the unit involved in a previous tax scandal, and then as CEO in the 2012 LIBOR rate
scandal
 Barclays fined 290 million pounds, its share price plummeted, Diamond resigned as CEO and forfeited his bonus
of 60 million pounds
JAMES “JES” STALEY

Group Chief Executive of Barclays
Appointed December 2015
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE AUTHENTICITY OF BOB
DIAMOND’S LEADERSHIP?

•Bob Diamond clearly has no regard for his authenticity as a leader.

Although he was an effective leader, he was a bad one. He let
himself get involved in scandals. Therefore, Diamond’s leadership
approach is the antithesis or opposite of authentic leadership.
WHAT ARE THE DRAWBACKS OF DIAMOND’S LEADERSHIP
APPROACH?

•Bob Diamond’s leadership lacks authenticity and integrity. His

involvement in controversies cost him his position as CEO of
Barclays and even compromised the reputation of the company.
HOW IMPORTANT IS AUTHENTICITY FOR JES STANLEY IN
IMPROVING THE REPUTATION OF BARCLAYS?

•In the involvement in a whistle-blowing scandal, Jes Stanley’s

behavior fell short of the standard expected of a CEO. If he was
trying to improve the reputation of Barclays, he should have been
more careful with his action and more serious so as not to
undermine his credibility.
