INTRODUCTION
• Waste-to-energy (WtE) or energy-from-waste (EfW) is the
process of generating energy in the form of electricity and/or
heat from the primary treatment of waste, or the processing of
waste into a fuel source
• WtE is a form of energy recovery.
• Most WtE processes generate electricity and/or heat directly
through combustion, or produce a combustible fuel commodity,
such as methane, methanol, ethanol or synthetic fuels
• This study deals with estimation of the amount of solid waste
generated by a part of the Pune city by conducting visits on the
sites.
• The garbage has several nutrients, hence can be advantageously
processed to produce many bye products and end products viz.
gas, electricity and also organic manure which is highly suited
for organic farming.
• In this study an overview of the use of current waste to generate
electricity is proposed. Also, brief of various techniques to crates
by products manufactured from this waste will be proposed.
• Based on the energy potential available, the feasibility of energy
conversion through combustion of garbage using available waste
has been carried out.
• A Model to demonstrate the working of the process plant will be
presented
NEED OF STUDY
• Increases in our population and change in uptake patterns have
influenced waste composition and generation rate.
• There is a direct need to assess the total waste generation and
physical compositions, particle action etc to segregate the waste
in different forms.
• Also, in urban cities that are growing rapidly there is a problem
of land area for dumping wastes.
• Due to processing the wastes daily, the solid waste can be
managed on daily basis and efficiently.
• Municipal solid waste management (MSWM) in one of the
major environment problems of mega cities.
• Various studies reveal that about 90% of MSW is disposed off
unscientifically in open dumps and landfills, creating problems
to public health and the environment.
• Rapid industrialization and population explosion in India has led
to the migration of people from villages to cities, generating
thousands of tons of MSW per day which is expected to increase
significantly in the near future, as the country is striving to attain
a status of industrialized nation by the year 2020.
AIM

The main aim of this project is to highlight the importance of solid

waste management in urban cities and Based on the energy potential
available propose model to develop the energy conversion through
Incineration using available waste
OBJECTIVES
• To conduct site visits at the Pune Municipal waste dumping sites
• To study various processes engaged in the generation of energy
from solid wastes.
• Define problem statement- Generation of electricity from solid
waste conversion.
• To compare the different processes and to analyse the obtained
by-products from combustion of wastes.
• Create a demo model to show the process of electricity
generation from solid waste
ABOUT THE PROJECT
• Pune generates 7,000 metric tonnes (MT) of Municipal Solid
Waste(MSW) daily, which is expected to increase to 18,000 MT by
2021.
• The present landfill sites that are being utilized for disposing the
garbage are approaching their full capacity and even with the
envisaged capacity addition, the situation is unlikely to improve.
• For The Municipal Corporation of Pune (PMC) we has thus
proposed on a project to reduce the amount of MSW being
disposed in the landfill sites and utilizing the waste for productive
purposes such as generation of power from waste. The study has
identified location, namely Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Waste
deposition site, for implementing this project.
The following facilities will be developed as a part of the integrated
municipal waste handling project:
• Plants for converting MSW to Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF), capable of
processing 1300 TPD at Okhla and 650 TPD
• A bio-methanation plant capable of handling of 100 TPD of green
waste
• A water recovery plant capable of handling up to 6 MLD of treated
sewage at the site for recycling into process water and cooling water.
• A Power plant with a generation capacity of 16 MW
• Transportation of RDF for combustion in the boiler of the powerplant
mentioned above.

METHODOLOGY
• The project study involved two stages. The primary data was
gathered through a Literature survey targeted by web searches
and review of eBooks, manuals, codes and journal papers.
• After review the problem statement is defined and sample
preparation is taken up for detail study and analysis purposes.
• This project execution follows the flow chart given below. The
following flow chart describes the layout of this project briefly:
TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW
TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW
INCINERATION
• Incineration is a waste treatment
process that involves the
combustion of solid waste at
1000C. Waste materials are
converted into ash, flue gas, and
heat
• The ash is mostly formed by the
inorganic constituents of the waste
and gases due to organic waste.
• The heat generated by incineration
is used to generate electric power.

CONCLUSION
• Waste to energy conversion processes need to be introduced in the
competitive power generation field in a commercial manner by the
advertisement of the practical success they are capable of bringing to the
mass.
• Incineration method to produce energy has the potential to convert the
increasing quantity of waste into some serious quantity of energy that can
help us to deal with our power outage problem and alleviation of
unwanted waste as well.
• Such WtE plant burns the waste in control condition to generate steam
that is used to run the turbine and generate electricity.
• Around 500MWh to 700MWh energy is generated by per ton of waste by
MSW combusted
• The method is simple but the complication occurs while maintain and
controlling the harmful materials, compounds produced.
