I will be able to show that:

1.I know what stagecraft means

2.I can suggest how Act III Scene I
could be staged

Who does stagecraft mean?

• Stagecraft is the term used to

discuss:
– What the characters say and how they
say it
– What the characters do on stage and
how they do it (move, facial
expressions etc...)
Stagecraft
‘It’s not just what you say, it’s how you say it!’

How do you think these lines should be

delivered (said and acted)?
• ‘A plague a' both your houses!’
• ‘Romeo, the hate I bear thee can afford
No better term than this, –thou art a villain.’
• ‘I do protest, I never injured thee,’
• ‘Men's eyes were made to look, and let them gaze;
I will not budge for no man's pleasure, I.’
• ‘Or else depart; here all eyes gaze on us.’

Act III, Scene I?

Romeo

If you were a director what advice would you give
them about their acting in Act III, Scene I?
Stagecraft
How would you direct the fight scene?
• How would the characters speak/act and why?

• Benvolio would act slightly worried and nervous
because he is worried that the Capulets are around
and he doesn’t want to end up in a fight.

When he says “Or else depart; here all eyes
gaze on us“ he should pull on Mercutio’s arm and
point to another place where they could talk to show
that he is anxious and wants to avoid the fight that
will be taking place.
