 ABSTRACT
Crankshaft is one of the critical components for the effective and precise
working of the internal combustion engine. In this paper a dynamic simulation is
conducted on a crankshaft from a single cylinder 4- stroke petrol engine. A three-
dimension model of petrol engine crankshaft is created using SOLID WORKS
2016 software. Finite element analysis (FEA) is performed to obtain the
variation of stress magnitude at critical locations of crankshaft. Simulation inputs
are taken from the engine specification chart. The dynamic analysis is done
using FEA Software called ANSYS WORKBENCH R 2016. This load is applied
to the FE model in ANSYS, and boundary conditions are applied according to
the engine mounting conditions. The analysis is done for finding critical location
in crankshaft. Stress and strain variation along with its deformation values are
investigated. The obtained results are compared with the crankshaft made up of
different composite materials. Results obtained from the analysis is help full to
identify the best suitable convenient replacement material for making the
crankshaft.
 OBJECTIVE

The main objective of the project is to find the critical location in

the crankshaft and the stress and strain variaton along with its
deformation values are investigated. The obtained results are
compared with the crankshaft made up of different composite
materials. Results obtained from the analysis is help full to
identify the best suitable convenient replacement material for
making the crankshaft.
MATERIALS&PROCESSES
The most commonly used material for the crankshaft is MILD STEEL
Properties of mild steel
Young's Modulus : 2.1e+005Mpa
Poisson's ratio : 0.3
Density : 7.85e-006 Kg/mm3
Tensile ultimate Strength: 841Mpa

we are using composite materials like platinum alloy, aluminium alloy, chilled cast iron
Properties of platinum alloy
Young's Modulus : 96000 Mpa
Poisson's ratio : 0.36
Density : 4.62e-006 Kg/mm3
Tensile ultimate Strength : 1070 Mpa
Properties of Chilled Cast Iron
Young's Modulus : 1.2e+005 Mpa
Poisson's ratio : 0.275
Density : 7.2e-006 Kg/mm3
Tensile ultimate Strength : 414 Mpa
By using these values in ansys software and performing finite element analysis the stress and strain
variations in crank shaft

 WORKDONE

Literature survey has done by reading journals of authors who

worked on the same field .For the further refrence in the project
 Work to be done
The 3D modelling of crank shaft to be done in Solidworks designing software

The 3D model of crank shaft should be undergo finite element analysis by using Ansys software

The material properties varies for each element the analysis should be done by entering the
properties of composite material in Ansys

The stress and strain varies from each material and note the total deformation of the crank shaft
made with different composite materials in the tabular coloumn
