 In Psychotherapy and psychiatry,


a period of unhappiness and
low morale.
 Lasts longer than several weeks.
 May include Ideation of
self-inflicted injury or suicide.
 Chronic in nature.

 A common mental disorder

 Loss of interest/pleasure

 Disturbed sleep/apetite

 Poor concentration.

PREVALENCE:
 Depression occurs in persons
of all genders,ages and
backgrounds.
 It is a common illness
affecting 121million people
worldwide.
 It is among the leading
disability in the world.
 It affects18.8 million
Americans each year. 8
 An estimated one in 10 Americans suffer
from depression.
 15% of the population of most developing
countries suffer from depression.
 India ranks 5th in depression with a rate of
1,400 persons affected every year.
 Hundreds and thousands of medications
are given out each year to treat
depression.
 15% of depressed persons commit
suicide.

Genetic or heriditary :-

 Family history

Biological or biochemical factors:-
 It is caused by Biochemical imbalances in brain.
 The chemical messengers in brain called as
“Neurotransmitters” allow communication across nerves that
connect different regions of brain.
 The “mood regulating’’ monoamine type of neurotransmitters
namely Noradrenaline(NA)and Serotonin (5HT) fail to function
normally.

Major life changes
 Negative or particularly stressfull events can trigger
depression.
Ex:- Death of a loved one , loss of job, physical abuse,
family troubles etc.
Major illness such as heart attack,stroke,or cancer may
