DEFINITION OF
UNEMPLOYMENT
■ Unemployment generally defined as the number of persons,
who are willing to work for the current wage rates in society
but not employed .
■ Man’s inability to find work or any job according to his
qualification and aptitude.
■ Unemployed people are those who are seeking work or laid off
for more than a week.
UNEMPLOYMENT AND
ECONOMY IN PAKISTAN
■ Pakistan's Unemployment Rate dropped to 5.79 % in Jun 2018,
from the previously reported number of 5.94 % in Jun 2015.
■ Unemployment reduces the long run growth potential of the
economy.
■ Unemployment affects the economy adversely as the productivity
falls below the normal level.
■ In unemployment situation, there are more resources for
production but no man power leads to wastage of economic
resources.

■ Recession and financial crisis of country.
■ Poor education system and lack of skills.
■ Rapid change in technology.
■ Discrimination on caste, race and religion etc.
■ Change in global market prices.
■ Over growth of population.

■ People lost their skills due to no usage of human capital.
■ Most of people become frustrated and involved in criminal
activities.
■ Families facing financial difficulties to fulfil their basic needs.
■ Political instability increases with poor standard of living.
■ Employed people feel insecure for their jobs.

■ Government should have made policies to reduce unemployment.
■ Government will start capital project like new roads, construction
of school and hospitals or infrastructure.
■ Also they will have increase purchasing power by reducing
taxation.
■ Provide proper and merit based recruitment and training to
enhances employee skills.
■ Increase the demand of credit and savings by reducing interest
rate.

■ More assistance to self-employed people.

CONCLUSION
One of the main problems faced by the developing countries is
unemployment. It is not only one of the major obstacles in the
country’s economic growth but also has several other negative impacts
on the individual as well as the society as a whole. As a matter of
principle it becomes the duty of government to provide employment to
all.
