Introduction to CSE

Dr. K. Subrahmanyam
Professor in CSE
What is Engineering???
• “Engineering is all around us, so people often take it for
granted, like air and water. Ask yourself, what do I touch that is
not engineered? Engineering develops and delivers consumer
goods, builds the networks of highways, air and rail travel, and
the internet, mass produced antibiotics, creates artificial heart
valves, builds lasers, and offers such wonders an imaging
technology and conveniences like microwave ovens and
compact discs. In short, engineers make over quality of life
possible” (William A.Wulf, President of the National Academy of Engineering)
• “Engineering is the application of science to the common
purpose of life” (Count Rumford)
• Scientists Investigate that which already is; Engineer Creates
that which has never been - Albert Einstein
Engineering is….
• The profession in which a knowledge of the
mathematical and natural sciences gained by study,
experience, and practice is applied with judgment to
develop ways to utilize, economically, the materials
and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind
• Engineering technologists use their knowledge to
help design and make bridges, buildings, computers,
electrical appliances, power plants, transport
infrastructures, etc.,
• Engineering also deal with the process of producing a
technical product or system to meet a specific need
to benefit mankind.
What Does A Typical Engineer Do?
• Engineers are problem solvers, organizers, communicators,
calculators and designers.
• They are capable of clearly defining a problem and its
relevant constraints (such as time, cost, etc.) and providing a
simple solution.
• A senior engineer will usually perform less technical work
(calculations and designs) but instead focus on managing a
project or team of engineers.
What does an engineer do?
Engineers do the following:
• Design
• Evaluate
• Develop
• Test
• Modify
• Install
• Inspect
• Maintain
In What? : A wide variety of products and systems. They also
recommend and specify materials and processes, supervise
manufacturing and construction, conduct failure analysis, provide
consulting services.
Role of Computer Engineers
An important function of computer engineers is to integrate these components
into computer and network systems. This all requires a good working knowledge
of electrical engineering.
Another important aspect of computer engineering is software development.
Computer software includes:
• operating systems;
• applications: word processing, spreadsheets, accounting, database
management, graphics, computer-assisted design (CAD), computer-assisted
manufacturing (CAM), audio, video, media and games;
• networking and communications: World Wide Web (WWW), voice over Internet
Protocol (VOIP), instant messaging and email;
• utilities: file handling, disk management, device drivers, archiving and backup
• programming languages: editing, compiling and debugging; and
• security: antivirus, firewalls, encryption and user authentication.
Role of Computer Engineers
Computer hardware engineers "research, design, develop and test
computer systems and components such as processors, circuit boards,
memory devices, networks and routers. Computer hardware includes:
• microprocessors;
• memory chips: random-access memory (RAM), read-only memory
(ROM) and nonvolatile rewritable flash memory;
• data storage devices: hard disks, solid-state drives and optical drives;
• input devices: keyboards, mice, joysticks and gaming controllers,
cameras, microphones, scanners, touch screens and remote sensors;
• output devices: printers, monitors, audio devices and remote controls;
• networking components: adapters, modems, switches and routers.
Strategic Planning
• First have a fixed aim framed at the end of Sem-2
• Accordingly exercise your flexibilities in curriculum
choice- Selection of Professional Core, Professional
Electives, Open Electives, University Electives and
Value Added Courses
• Undertake your design / projects in same as that of the
area you aim to develop your career.
• Develop your employability skills in same area that you
aim towards.
• Be actively participating in National/ International
student events in area that you aim for your career,
through paper presentations, model exhibiting etc.
Professional Elective Streams of CSE

• Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning

• Data Analytics
• Software Engineering
• Networks & Security
• Distributed & Cloud Computing
What does Career Choice mean?
• Direct Employment after B.Tech.
• Public sector
• Private Sector
• Service based or Product based
• Higher Studies and then Employment: Higher studies either in
India or abroad.
• R&D
• Entrepreneurship
• Social Service
• Academia
