 INTRODUCTION:
• Due to changed lifestyle, dietary habits and environmental pollution
derangement of body as well as mental health is caused and as a result,
lifestyle metabolic disorders like liver-kidney diseases, urinary infections,
PCOS etc. become common irrespective of age group.
• So, the emerge of potent drugs are necessary to cope up the current life
style disorders which is having least adverse effects and also quick effective
actions.
• In Rasashastra, the word Rasayana has been used in two senses; one as a
medicinal preparation like Kupipakwa rasayana which contains mainly
Parada and related group of drugs whereas the second for ‘Rejuvenation’
which means bringing back the excellence of Rasa dhatu.
• Compared with herbal medications, mineral drugs are having exclusive
benefits like quick absorption, minimal dosage and long shelf life.

• ‘Shilajatu Rasayana5’ is a Herbo-mineral
formulation mentioned in ‘Rasendra Chudamani’
which contains Shilajatu Bhasma, Loha Bhasma,
Vaikranta Bhasma, Triphala Churna and Trikatu
Churna and indicated in Yonyaamaya, Gulma,
Meha, Pandu etc.
• The study was conducted in BLDEA’S, Bijapur to
assess the effect of Shilajatu Rasayana on
ovarian volume, reduction of cysts, hormones
and induction of ovulation in letrozole induced
PCOS in 30 female Albino rats, of 10 in each

Materials and methods:
• 30 female Albino rats were taken, 10 in each group maintained under
standard laboratory conditions. Letrozole (1 mg/kg in 1 ml CMC) orally was
given to induce PCOS in all animals.
• After 28 days, 5 animals from each group were sacrificed and
histomorphometrical study of ovaries and uterus along with hormonal assay
of blood were conducted. Remaining 5 animals in each group were
subjected for the drug administration for 40 days and later they were
sacrificed and the below histological and hormonal studies were conducted.

A clinical study on Punarnava Mandura in the management
of Pandu Roga in old age (Geriatric anemia) – Megha. G.

• Punarnava Mandura7 is a widely practiced Herbo-
mineral medicine which contains Punarnava, Trivrut,
Trikatu, Triphala, Mandura bhasma etc.
• This study was conducted to evaluate Panduhara &
Rasayana effect of Punarnava Mandura on patients of
Pandu in old age.
Materials and Methods:
• Patients aged between 50 to 80 years irrespective of
sex were selected from GAM, Jamnagar.
• Patients having cardinal symptoms of Pandu like
Panduta, Shrama, Pindikodveshtana, Dourbalya etc. &
with Hb% below the normal range were selected.
• Patients were given 2 tablets of Punarnava Mandura
BD with Anupana of Takra for a duration of 90 days.

 Discussion and Conclusion:
Discussion:
• In Shilajatu rasayana, the multi-mineral ingredients are having anti-oxidant,
immuno-modulatory, hypoglycemic & hypolipidemic effects.
• Studies suggest that various elements in S.R such as Zn, Mg, Cr, Vit. B&A,
Omega fatty acids and Phytosterols are having hormonal balancing & estrogenic
effects which have shown significant results in PCOS by their synergic activity. It
leads to maturation of follicles, reduction in cysts & enhances ovulation.
• In old age, Vata Vrudhi and Dhatu Kshaya leads to a vicious cycle of Pandu
which makes it Kruchra Sadhya.
• Most of the ingredients in Punarnava Mandura ie. Triphala, Trikatu, Chitraka
etc. are having Deepana & Pachana properties which improves absorption of
nutrition & body metabolism, also relieving constipation.
• Other drugs of Punarnava Mandura like Amalaki, Punarnava, Daruharidra etc.
are having immunomodulatory & anti-oxidative properties along with
necessary multivitamins.

• From these points it is clear that Herbo-mineral drugs are having great
application as Rasayana in day to day clinical practice which acts as Jara
vyadhi nivrathaka, Deergha ayushkara & promotes Prashasta dhatu.
• Mineral Rasayana drugs are unique in such a way that, along with its anti-
oxidant, hematogenic, nutritive etc. properties, it provides compensation of
essential micro elements, minerals & other nutrients which can’t be ignored.
Conclusion:
• In this new era, better techniques of drug analysis have come up, which can
help in authenticating Rasa and Rasayana drugs; pharmacological evaluation
of those certainly explore their effects on healthcare which can bring a
revolution in Ayurveda & remarkable glory in society.
