Paris to Berlin

1885-1887
WHY

• Rizal went to Paris and Germany in order to


specialized in Ophthalmology. Rizal chose this
branch of medicine because he wanted to cure
his mother's eye ailment.

Dr. Louis Weckert (1852-1906)

wherein Rizal was an apprentice

• He studied music only because many of his schoolmates at Ateneo
were taking lessons.

learned the solfeggio, piano and voice culture in 1 ½ month.
• He was flutist in various impromptu reunion of Filipinos in Paris.
• Some of his compositions are:
a. “Alin Mang Lahi” - a patriotic song which asserts that any race
aspires for freedom
b. “La Deportacion” – a sad danza, composed in Dapitan during his
exile

Rizal on German Women
March 11, 1886- he sent Trinidad a letter how he expressed and
admired German women. He said that they are serious, diligent,
educated and friendly.
RIZAL’S DARKEST WINTER(1886)
• He lived in poverty because no money arrived from
Calamba. Rizal starved in Berlin and shivered wintry cold,
he could not pay his landlord and he was eating one meal
a day, his health down due to lack of proper
nourishment.

• After the publication of Noli Me Tangere, Rizal received


1,000 pesos and immediately paid Viola then left Berlin
by train.
