Lamella heat exchanger

Presented by: Panchal Tusharkumar Himanshubhai P18TD018

• This heat exchanger consists of an outer tubular shell surrounding an
inside bundle of heat transfer elements. These elements termed as
LAMELLA , which are flat tubes .
• One fluid (tube fluid) flows inside the lamellas and the other fluid
(shell fluid) flows longitudinally in the spaces between them, with no
baffles on the shell side. The exchanger thus has a single pass, and
the flow arrangement is generally counterflow.
• The inside opening of the lamella ranges from 3 to 10 mm (0.1 to 0.4
in.) and the wall thickness from 1.5 to 2 mm
Applications:
• Cooking fluid heating in pulp mills
• Liquid pre heater
• Chemical industries

Advantages:
Strong turbulence in the fluid
high operating pressure
calculation of
heat transfer through ribbed surface:
• Total transferred heat is a sum of heat transferred through the outer surface of
the pipe (without ribs) Acn, and the heat transferred through ribs area, Ar

𝑄 = 𝛼𝑟 𝐴𝑟 𝑡𝑎 − 𝑡𝑐𝑚 + 𝛼𝑐𝑛 𝐴𝑐𝑛 (𝑡𝑎 − 𝑡𝑐𝑛 )

• The degree of usefulness is the ratio between heat transferring onto the ribs and
heat that would be transferred on the ribs, when all of them would have
temperature tcn

𝐴𝑟 𝐴𝑐𝑛
ƞ𝑝 = × ƞ𝑟 +
𝐴𝑛 𝐴𝑛

where, ηr=(ta – trm)/ (ta – tcn)
