Concrete Admixtures

Learning Objectives
 Provide an introduction of chemical admixtures for
use in concrete
 Discuss definitions, uses, benefits, and cautionary
measures
WHAT ARE ADMIXTURES

Admixtures are chemical substances

(other than fine and coarse aggregates,
cement, or water), which are added in
small amounts just before or during the
mixing stage to concrete products.
NEED OF ADMIXTURES
 OVER DECADES, ATTEMPTS HAVE BEEN
MADE TO OBTAIN CONCRETE WITH
CERTAIN DESIRED CHARACTERISTICS
SUCH AS HIGH COMPRESSIVE
STRENGTH, HIGH WORKABILITY, AND
HIGH PERFORMANCE AND DURABILITY
PARAMETERS TO MEET THE
REQUIREMENT OF COMPLEXITY OF
MODERN STRUCTURES.
FUNCTION OF ADMIXTURE
*To improve workability of fresh concrete
*To improve durability by entrainment of air
*To reduce the water required
*To accelerate setting & hardening & thus to
*produce high early strength
*To aid curing
*To impart water repellent / water proofing
property
Mineral admixtures

Admixtures are added in concrete to

improve the quality of concrete. Mineral
admixtures include fly ash (FA), silica
fume (SF), ground granulated blast
furnace slag (GGBS), metakaolin (MK),
and rice husk ash (RHA) which possess
certain characteristics through which
they influence the properties
of concrete differently

CHEMICAL ADMIXTURES

Water-reducing admixture / Plasticizers

They achieve a higher strength by decreasing
the water cement ratio at the same workability
as an admixture free mix. To achieve the same
workability by decreasing the cement content so
as to reduce the heat of hydration in mass
concrete. To increase the workability so as to
ease placing in accessible locations
ADVANTAGES OF ADMIXTURES
*Improved workability
*Excellent adhesive strength on different and demanding
surfaces
*Improved open time
*Hydrophobicity (water-repellent properties) and abrasion
resistance
*Water-repellent protection
*Reduced mould and mildew growth
DISADVANTAGES OF ADMIXTURES

*It has increased drying shrinkage.

.
*It offers reduced resistance to sulphate attack.

*CaCl2 high risk of corrosion of steel – not permitted in

reinforced concrete.

*It is more expensive and less effective.
