WHAT IS THE FIRST

THING THAT COMES

INTO YOUR MIND
WHEN YOU HEAR THE
WORD WORK?
WORK!!!
WORK!!!
WORK!!!
OBJECTIVES
• DEFINE THE TERM WORK
• IDENTIFY THE FORCE THAT DOES
WORK
• CALCULATE WORK DONE BY A
FORCE IN VARIOUS SITUATIONS
ACTIVITY #1
• A girl pulling her toy car.
• A man is lifting a box to be placed on
top of the table.
• A girl carrying a bag walks down the
street.
• A mango fruit falling from the branch.
A GIRL PULLING HER TOY CAR.

• Yes, the situation is an example

of work. The force exerted by
the girl in pulling the toy car is in
the same direction as the
distance covered when the force
is applied.
A MAN LIFTING A BOX TO BE PLACED ON TOP OF A
TABLE.

• Yes, the situation is an

example of work. The force
exerted by the man is
upward and the box
displaced upward.
A GIRL CARRYING A BAG WALKS DOWN THE STREET.

• No, the situation is not an

example of work. There is force
and there is displacement.
However the line of action of
force and displacement are not
parallel but perpendicular.
A MANGO FRUIT FALLING FROM THE BRANCH.

• Yes, the situation is an

example of work. The work
is done by the force of the
gravity on the mango.
WORK

•It is present when the force

exerted causes an object to
have a displacement in the
same direction of the force.
FOR WORK TO BE DONE, THREE
CONDITIONS MUST BE MET..
• There must be a force acting on the
object.
• The object has to move a certain
distance called the displacement.
• There must be a component of the
force in the direction of the motion.
EXAMPLE:
• A mother lifting up the baby from the
crib does WORK on the baby.
• A father carrying the baby across the
room does not do any work on the
baby.

WHY DO YOU THINK THIS IS SO?

Analyze each
situation/illustration and tell
whether there is work done
or none.

Thus, the unit for
work is Joule (J).
This unit is named
after the English
Physicist James
Prescott Joule.
Joule (J)
1 Joule is equal to the work
done or energy expended in
applying a force of one Newton
through a distance of one
meter.
where: W = work done
F = force
d = displacement
where: W = work done
F = force
d = displacement
= angle
Suppose a woman is pushing a
grocery cart with a 500-N force
along the 7 m aisle, how much
work is done in pushing the
cart from one end of the aisle
to the other?
The work done in lifting 2 kg
bag is 20 J. How high was the
bag lifted?
A man pulled a cart at a
distance of 30 m with a force
of 50 N at an angle of 40° along
the horizontal. How much work
is done on the cart?

40 °
