RADIOLOGICAL

HEALTH

REPORTER:
RALF M. MASUGOD
SOME HELPFUL USES
OF RADIATION:

• Cancer Treatment
• Radiosurgery
• Killing Microbes
• Tracers
• Nuclear Power Plant (power
generation)
Cancer Treatment
• This treatment is called
radiotherapy. Cobalt-60 is
commonly used to kill
cancer cells. The idea is to
aim accurately at these cells
with the correct strength.
Utilizing radiation to
combat cancer is an
important in medical field.
Radiosurgery
-is surgery
using radiation, that is,
the destruction of
precisely selected areas
of tissue using ionizing
radiation rather than
excision with a blade.
Killing Microbes

Gamma rays
successfully kill
microbes that cause
food to decay. So food
treated with this
radiation have a longer
shelf life.
Tracers
A Geiger Counter is an
instrument that
measures radiation. If
radioisotopes are added
to oil or gas, engineers
can follow the
radioisotope, and trace
any leaks in oil or gas
pipes.
Nuclear Power Plants

-are fueled by uranium,

which emits radioactive
substances, the purpose
of a nuclear power plant
is to boil water to
produce steam to power
a generator to produce Bataan Nuclear Power Plant:
electricity. completed but never fueled
3 Factors to Minimize Exposure
of Radiation:

• Time

• Distance

• Shielding
TIME

• Reducing the time

of an exposure
reduces the
effective dose
proportionally.
DISTANCE

• the most effective of

the principles is
distance. The
further a person is
from the source the
less intense the
radiation source is.
SHIELDING

• Wearing protective
lead shielding and
thyroid collars can
protect the
radiosensitive areas
of the body
Radiation Emergency steps:
NUCLEAR ACCIDENT AND TERRORIST ATTACKS
Get Inside

• In a radiation emergency you may be

asked to get inside a building and take
shelter for a period of time.
• This action is called "sheltering in place."
• Get to the middle of the building or a
basement, away from doors and
windows.
Stay Inside

• Staying inside will reduce your exposure

to radiation.
• Close windows and doors.
• Take a shower or wipe exposed parts of
your body with a damp cloth.
• Drink bottled water and eat food in
sealed containers.
Stay Tuned

• Get the latest information

from radio, television, the Internet,
mobile devices, etc.
• Emergency officials will provide
information on where to go to get
screened for contamination.
THANK YOU AND
GOD SPEED!!!
