Direct and
Indirect Speech

Direct Speech :
Direct sentences uttered directly by the speaker
where in his writing use quotation marks two.
Example :
• Eko says, “I like my parents so much”
• Evi said, “I want to help my parents”

Indirect Speech ( Reported Speech) :


Sentence that tells what the speaker said.
Example :
• Eko says that he likes his parents so much.
• Evi said that she wanted to help her parents.
 Reporting (Verbs)
In direct sentences always use an opening verb
that functions to convey the speech of the
speaker.
When reporting verbs in the present form, the
reported verbs reported are also in the form of
the present in indirect speech.

Example 1
Direct : Laura says, ”I am learning English”
Indirect : Laura says that he is learning English

Example 2
Direct : Putri has said, “I have to come on time”
Indirect : Putri has said that has to come on time
When reporting verbs in past form, then there
will be changes in the form of time (tensen) from
direct sentences to indirect sentences.

• Besides there are changes in times (tenses), there
are also other changes :

 Tomorrow and here in direct change to the


following day and there in indirect.
 Use of conjunctions in indirect sentences

1. Declarative Sentences
If the direct sentence in the form of a positive or
negative statement uses that cojunctive “That”.

Example
Direct : Yanti said, “I like my new house”
Indirect : Yanti said that she liked her new
house
2. Interrogative Sentence

If the direct sentence is in the form of a


question sentence that does not use the
question word , then in a indirect sentence is
used “If” or Wheter”.

Example
Direct : Intan asked me, “Can you help me?”
Indirect : Intan asked me if I could help her.
3. Imperative Sentence

If in the direct sentence in the form of a positive


or negative command, then “To” is used in an
indirect sentence in front of the verb for positive
commands and “Not” + “To” the front of the verb
for negative commands.

Example
Direct : Yanti ordered me, “Shut the doors!”
Indirect : Yanti ordered me to shut the doors.
