What is a Text?

Two Main Categories of Texts


• Literary
• Factual
(Within these are various text types. Each text
type has a common and usual way of using
language)

LITERARY FACTUAL
Literary Texts
Literary texts include Aborigin Dreaming
stories, fairy tales, movie script, plays, novels,
song lyrics, mimes, and soap operas.
Three main categories:
• Narrative
• Poetry
• Drama
(Media texts such as films, videos, TV show, CDs
can also fall in this category.
Factual Texts
Factual Text include adverticements,
Internet web sites, current affair shows,
debates, recipes, report and instruction.

The main text types in this categories are:


Recount, response, explanation, discussion,
information report, exposition and
procedure.

The art of describing
A good narrative uses words to paint a
picture in our minds of:
• what the characters look (their
appearance)
• where the action is taking place (the
setting)
• how things are happening (the action)

Action words
When we looked at the language features of
narratives, we saw that action words are used to
describe what is happening. Action words are called
verbs.

By using the right verbs, the narrator can give the


audience a better description of the action. Compare
the following:

He moved sideways. He darted sideways


She ate her dinner quickly. She gobbled her dinner
He said quietly. He whispered

Types of Narratives
There are many different types of narratives
including;
humour mystery
romance fantasy
crime science fiction
real-life fiction diary – novels
historical fiction adventure
Humour
A humorous narrative is one that aims to make
the audience laugh as a part of telling a story.
Here is a typical structure:
