Philippine Festival Dances

Festival Dances
- cultural dances performed to the
strong beats of percussion
instruments by a community of
people sharing the same culture.
- it is usually done in honor of a
patron Saint or as a thanksgiving for
a bountiful harvest.
 A. Cultural with Religious Influence
1. Ati- Atihan-
- A feast held annually in January in honor of the Sto. Nino
(infant Jesus) in the island and town of Kalibo, Aklan.
- The name “Ati- Atihan” means “to be like Aetas” or “make
believe Ati’s”.
- The festival consists of tribal dance,music accompanied by
indigenous costumes and weapons, and parade along the
streets.
- It has inspired many other Philippine Festivals including Sinulog
Festival of Cebu and Dinagyang of Ilo-Ilo.
2. Moriones Festival-
- Annual festival held on Holy Week on the Island of
Marinduque.
- The “Moriones” are men and women in costumes and masks
replicating the garb of biblical Roman soldiers within the
story of The Passion of the Christ as interpreted by the local
folks.
- The moriones refers to the masked and costumed penitents
who march around the town for seven days searching for
Saint Longinus( a Roman centurion who was blind in one eye.
- The Moriones or Moryonan tradition has inspired the creation
of other festivals in the Philippines where cultural practices
or folk history is turned to a street festivals.
3. Dinagyang Festival
- It is a religious and cultural festival in Ilo- Ilo City held on the
fourth Sunday of January.
- It is also done to honor the Sto. Nino and celebrate the arrival
of Malay settlers on Panay Island.

4. Sinulog Festival
- It is held annually every third Sunday of January.
- The festival is characterized by a very long parade with many
groups of persons dressed in colorful costumes, finding their
way through the streets while dancing the Sinulog.
- The dance is accompanied by the sound of drums: all the time
moving two steps forward followed by one step backward.
5. Feast of Our Lady of Penafrancia
- It is celebrated on the 3rd Saturday of September in Naga City, Bicol.
- The Feast is preceded by a Novena, nine days of prayer in honor of the Virgin Mary
- On the first day, the image of Virgin Mary is brought from its shrine to the Naga
Cathedral where the novena is held.
- On the last day, the image is returned to her shrine following the Naga River route.

6. Pahiyas Festival.
- Its is one of the country’s biggest and the most colorful harvest festival held every
May 15th.
- This is held to honor San Isidro Labrador (patron saint of farmers).
- The festival is deeply rooted in the traditional celebration of the townsfolk in
thanksgiving for bounty harvest.
B. Indigenous Influence/ Non Religious Festivals

1. Lanzones Festival
- Annual thanksgiving celebration for Camiguin Island’s bountiful harvest.
- Held every 3rd week of October in the time for the season of the tropical fruit
lanzones.

2. Masskara Festival
- The festival first began in 1980 during a period of crisis.
- In the midst of tragic events, they decided to hold a festival of smiles because the
city at that time was also known as the City of Smiles
- The initial festival was therefore a declaration by the people of the city that no
matter how tough and bad the times were, Bacolod City is going to pull through,
survive, and in the end, triumph.
3. Ibalong Festival
- It is non- religious festival in Legazpi, Albay every August of the year.
- The festival celebrates the epic story Ibalong who was accompanied by 3
legendary heroes namely Baltog, Handyong, and bantong and other
ancient heroes.
- People parade in the streets wearing masks and costumes to imitate the
appearances of the heroes and the villains portraying the classic battles
in bicol.

4. Kalilangan Festival
- An annual festivity that is celebrated in General Santos City, South
Cotabato and takes place in the month of February.
- Kalilang means “to celebrate”. They celebrate the tradition of sharing,
hospitality, and altruism as part of the cultural heritage of Mindanao.
C. Flower Festival
1. Panagbenga Festival
- “Blooming Flowers Festival”
- A month long annual flower festival occurring in Baguio
during the month of February
- It was created as a tribute to the City’s flowers and as a
way to rise up from the devastation of the 1990 Luzon
earthquake.
- The festival also includes street dancing, presented by
dancers clad in flower- inspired costumes.
D. Film Festival
- This festival is a gathering of artists, film makers,
directors, scriptwriters and other people involved in
film making.
- It is made to entertain, educate, and inform audience
to patronize our own film industry.
• Metro Manila Film festival; Cine Filipino are the
examples of this festivals that runs from the 25th of
December to the first week of January.
• During the course of festival, no foreign movies are
shown across the Philippines
