JEREMIAH 1:5

“BEFORE I FORMED YOU IN

THE WOMBED I KNEW YOU,
BEFORE YOU WERE BORN I
SET YOU APART; I
APPOINTED YOU AS A
PROPHET TO THE NATIONS.”
ABORTION

“As soon as the sound of your greeting

reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped
for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that
the Lord would fulfill His promises to her!”

Luke 1:44
Which is worse
having it and
not caring for it

or against abortion?
One of the nation’s with the highest rates of abortion is Russia.
According to UN reports, Russia’s abortion rate is 37.4. In other words,
for every 1,000 women between 15 to 44, 37.4
had an abortion.

RELIGION AND ABORTION
• BUDDHISM

BUDDHIST MONASTIC CODES

“Hold that life begins at conception, and that abortion,

which would then involve the deliberate destruction of
life, should be rejected.”
Among Buddhists, there is no official or preferred viewpoint
regarding abortion.

Dalai Lama (monk) said, “Abortion is negative” but the are

exceptions.

"I think abortion should be approved or disapproved according to

each circumstance."
• Hinduism

"When considering abortion, the Hindu way is to

choose the action that will do least harm to all involved:
the mother and father, the foetus and society."

India (Hindu) – They practice abortion because of cultural

preference for sons.

Female foeticide- abortion to prevent the birth of girl

babies.
• Islam

Pregnancy after 120 days – foetus is thought to become

living soul; is not permissible.

Prior to 4 months (first sixteen weeks) of gestation

– permissible ONLY in instances in which the mother's life
is in danger or in cases of rape.

The Quran states to not have an abortion for fear of

poverty. All schools accept abortion as a means to save the
mother's life.
• Judaism

Orthodox Jewish teaching allows abortion if necessary to safeguard the

life of the pregnant woman.

Orthodox Jews oppose abortion after the 40th day, with health-related
exceptions, and reform Jews tend to allow greater latitude for abortion.

Talmud- states that a foetus is not legally a person until it is delivered.

Torah – (Exodus 21:22-25) causing a woman to miscarry is a crime, but not a

capital crime, because the fetus is not considered a person.
• Christianity

Abortion – destroying life somewhere between conception and birth –

is wrong. The Bible states that the deliberate taking of an innocent
human life breaks the sixth commandment: “You shall not murder”.

Life is holy, pure and inviolable, and we must respect it as we respect God,
the giver of life. Throughout the whole Bible it is clear that God knows all
things, also that which is to come, and has known this from eternity. In this
way He has also always known each person, each life – even before
conception.

Christianity is based on faith in the Almighty God, and in His creating power, both in
natural and in spiritual things. The Bible, being the Word of God, is the basis for how
we conduct our lives. Our trust is in God, the Almighty Creator, who knows all things –
also the lives of those yet unborn. We, His creation, are called to live before Him in
reverence and awe, with full, unwavering faith in His boundless love, goodness and
wisdom. Any decision made with God brings rest and peace. We believe that many
lives would have been spared if God had been sought before these decisions were
made.
• God’s view on Human Life

“So God created mankind in his own image, in the

image of God, he created them; male and female he
created them” (Genesis 1:27).

As all people are God’s creation and a representation of Him, all

humanity is valuable to the Creator.

To end the life of the unborn signifies that life is not precious
and important, and to do so is in direct opposition to God’s
value of His creation. All humanity is precious to God.
Life is holy, pure and inviolable, and we must
respect it as we respect God, the giver of life.
Throughout the whole Bible it is clear that God
knows all things, also that which is to come, and
has known this from eternity. In this way He has
also always known each person, each life – even
before conception.
Consequences for Abortion and Ending the
Life of an Unborn Child

In the Mosaic Law, the punishment for

accidentally killing an unborn child was death.

“If people are fighting and hit a pregnant

woman and she gives birth prematurely, the
offender must be fined ... But if there is a
serious injury, you are to take life for life”
(Exodus 21:22, 23).
God Offers Forgiveness and Restoration
from Abortion

God promises to forgive if we confess. “If

we confess our sins, he is faithful and just
to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us
from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). This
passage says “all unrighteousness.” Every
sin. All of them. But first, we must confess.
