About mental illness

• Mental illness, also called mental health disorders, refers to a wide

range of mental health conditions.
• These disorders comprise a broad range of problems, with different
symptoms.
• That affects your mood, thinking and behavior.
• Examples of mental illness include depression, anxiety disorders,
schizophrenia, eating disorders and addictive behaviors.
WHAT EXACTLY IS THE CAUSE OF MENTAL ILLNESS?

• Mental illnesses have biological causes just as that of any physical illnesses like
malaria, diabetes, etc.
• Changes in neurotransmitter levels present inside the brain causes mental illnesses.
• Traumatic events, stresses, personalities, addictions do play an additive role in the
causation.
• Other biological factors that may be involved in the development of mental illness
include:
-Genetics
-Infections
-Brain defects or injury
-Prenatal damage
-Substance abuse
PSYCHIATRIST DISEASES OF CHILDREN.

• Mental disorders among children are described as serious changes in the way children typically
learn, behave, or handle their emotions, which cause distress and problems getting through the day.
• Three things to know here are :

1-: Most important one is to distinguish between normal behavior and psychiatric disease. Because
some parents are overcautious about even a small variability/change in normal behavior and some are
ignorant about even the big change.

2-: eg. of some NORMAL / TEMPORARY variations in the behavior of children like (A) Increased
hyperactivity/irritability is normal to some extent up to the age of 6 yrs, it decreases over time.
(B)strange environment, hunger, lethargy can increases hyperactivity.
(C) Concentration increases with age, so a lack of concentration in some conditions is normal in
children.
•3-: common psychiatric diseases/ symptoms seen in children like Anxiety
•Depression
•Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)
•Conduct Disorder (CD)
•Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
•Tourette Syndrome etc.
ARE MENTAL ILLNESS CURABLE?

• Most people diagnosed with a mental health condition can experience relief from their
symptoms and live a satisfying life by actively participating in an individualized treatment
plan.
• It varies from illness to illness depending upon the age, precipitant factors, symptoms,
duration of illness, how early treatment started, etc.
• An effective treatment plan may include medication, psychotherapy and peer support
groups.
• A balanced diet, exercise and sleep can also play a big role in your mental health.
