Introduction: Nano technology
• Nano’ word is derived from the Greek word ‘Nanos’ Which means
extremely small or dwarf. Nano particles are particles which lies in
dimension <100nm.
• Nano Science: It is the study of phenomenon of controlling materials at nano
scales, where properties differ significantly from those at a larger scale.
• Nano chemistry is related with the production and the reactions of
nanoparticles, nanostructures and their compounds.
• This cumulative work is called nanotechnology.

British standard institution, 2005

Nano particle:
• Nano-particles: are particles between 1 and 100
nanometers in size. In nanotechnology, a particle is
defined as a small object that behaves as a whole
unit with respect to its transport and properties.
PROPERTIES OF NANO PARTICLES:
• Bulk materials have constant physical properties
regardless of its size, among nanoparticles the size
often dictates the physical and chemical properties.
Thus, the properties of materials change as their size
approaches the nanoscale.
• Unique physical properties :
• Smaller size, larger surface area
• Increase in surface area to volume ratio
• Nano sized particles can even pass through the cell wall
in plants and animals.
• Nanotechnologists use this process to deliver at cellular Fig:TEM images of nanoparticles. a. Fe2O3, b. TiO2, c. MgO and d. ZnO
level which is more effective then the conventional

ZnO NPs in agriculture:

• Zinc oxide NPs have potential to boost the yield and growth of food crops.
• Peanut seeds were treated with different concentrations of zinc oxide
nanoparticles. Zinc oxide nanoscale treatment (25 nm mean particle size) at
1000 ppm concentration was used which promoted seed germination, seedling
vigor, and plant growth and these zinc oxide nanoparticles also proved to be
effective in increasing stem and root growth in peanuts.
• The colloidal solution of zinc oxide nanoparticles is used as fertilizer.

Conclusion:
• Nanotechnology provides an opportunity for controlled delivery of agrochemicals to
break disease resistance and improve plant growth enhancement and nutrient utilization.
Nanoencapsulation shows the benefit of more efficient and targeted use of pesticides,
herbicides and insecticides in environment friendly greener way.
• Nanotechnology in coordination with green chemistry and biotechnology provide an
opportunity for synthesis of nanomaterials by using plant extracts and living cells and it
leads to reduced use of toxic solvents and provide an eco-friendly environment and it
extended the scope of nanotechnology.
• The green synthesis of ZnO NPs is much safer and environment friendly compared to
chemical synthesis.
