CALL TO REFLECTION
PRELUDE:
Just a Closer Walk with Thee
arr. Mark Andersen
If your vision is for a year,
plant wheat.
If your vision is for ten
years, plant trees.
If your vision is for a
lifetime, plant people.
Chinese Proverb
Here is the test to find
whether your mission on
earth is finished:
if you’re alive, it isn’t.
Richard Bach
Character cannot be
developed in ease and quiet.
Only through experience of
trial and suffering can the
soul be strengthened; vision
cleared, ambition inspired,
and success achieved.
Helen Keller
God gives us the vision,
then He takes us down to the
valley to batter us into the
shape of the vision, and it is in
the valley that so many of us
faint and give way. Every
vision will be made real if we
will have patience…
Oswald Chambers
There are three stages
in the work of God:
impossible,
difficult,
done.
J. Hudson Taylor,
Missionary
I am sometimes asked by
people my age and younger
how in this world I can still be
committed to something as
messy as mission.
I believe it is time we ask
how in a place so messy
as this world we can
legitimately be committed
to anything but mission.
James R. Krabill,
missionary in Ivory Coast
Serving starts where you
are. If you understand
that your mission to the
faces at your table,
no matter how few,
ranks in importance with
the mission of a
great evangelist to
crowds of thousands,
then you have begun to
understand what Jesus
meant when he said,
“Love one another as I
have loved you.”
Paula D’Arcy
The real danger for
professing Christians lies
not in the more glaring
temptation and grosser
temptations and sins, but in
a slow deterioration of vision,
a slow death to daring,
courage and a willingness
to adventure. J.B. Phillips

Great Is Thy Faithfulness

# 276 in the Blue Hymnal

Great is Thy faithfulness, O
God my Father, There is no
shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy
compassions they fail not;
As Thou hast been Thou
forever will be.
Great is Thy faithfulness!
Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new
mercies I see; All I have
needed Thy hand hath
provided; Great is Thy
faithfulness, Lord, unto me!
Summer and winter and
springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon, and stars in
their courses above
Join with all nature in
manifold witness To
Thy great faithfulness,
mercy and love.
Great is Thy faithfulness!
Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new
mercies I see; All I have
needed Thy hand hath
provided; Great is Thy
faithfulness, Lord, unto me!
Pardon for sin and a peace
that endureth, Thine own
dear presence to cheer and
to guide; Strength for today
and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with
ten thousand beside!
Great is Thy faithfulness!
Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new
mercies I see; All I have
needed Thy hand hath
provided; Great is Thy
faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Thanksgiving
for the Word
O Word of God incarnate,
O Wisdom from on high,
O Truth unchanged, unchanging,
O Light of our dark sky:
We praise You for the radiance
That from the hallowed page,
A lantern to our footsteps,
Shines on from age to age.
SCRIPTURE READING—
Jonah 3:1-10
(Old Testament, Page 860
in pew Bible)
The word of the LORD came
to Jonah a second time,
saying, “Get up, go to
Nineveh, that great city,
and proclaim to it the
message that I tell you.”
So Jonah set out
and went to Nineveh,
according to the word of the
LORD. Now Nineveh was an
exceedingly large city, a
three days’ walk across.
Jonah began to go into the
city, going a day’s walk.
And he cried out, “Forty days
more, and Nineveh shall be
overthrown!” And the people
of Nineveh believed God;
they proclaimed a fast, and
everyone, great and small,
put on sackcloth.
When the news reached the
king of Nineveh, he rose
from his throne, removed his
robe, covered himself with
sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
Then he had a proclamation
made in Nineveh:
“By the decree of the king and
his nobles: No human being or
animal, no herd or flock, shall
taste anything. They shall not
feed, nor shall they drink
water. Human beings and
animals shall be covered with
sackcloth, and they shall cry
mightily to God.
All shall turn from their evil
ways and from the violence
that is in their hands. Who
knows? God may relent and
change his mind; he may turn
from his fierce anger, so that
we do not perish.”
When God saw what they did,
how they turned from their evil
ways, God changed his mind
about the calamity that he had
said he would bring upon them;
and he did not do it.

* This We Believe
(Congregation reads words in bold)

The Apostles’ Creed

Sisters and brothers, what do you
believe concerning God the
Father?

I believe in God the Father

Almighty, creator of heaven
and earth,
Sisters and brothers, what do you
believe concerning God the Son?
I believe in Jesus Christ his
only Son our Lord; who was
conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was
buried;
he descended into hell; the
third day he rose again from
the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sits on the right
hand of God the Father; from
thence he shall come to judge
the living and the dead.
Sisters and brothers, what do you
believe concerning God
the Holy Spirit?
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Catholic Church, the
communion of saints, the
forgiveness of sin, the
resurrection of the body, and
the life everlasting. Amen.

Here I Am, Lord

# 525 in the Blue Hymnal

I, the Lord of sea and sky,
I have heard My people cry.
All who dwell in dark and
sin, My hand will save.
I who made the stars of
night, I will make their
darkness bright. Who will
bear My light to them?
Whom shall I send?
Here I am Lord, Is it I Lord?
I have heard You calling in
the night. I will go Lord, if
You lead me. I will hold
Your people in my heart.

THE PEACE
The Prayers
of the
People
Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in his wonderful
face And the things of earth
will grow strangely dim In
the light of his glory and
grace.
The Lord’s Prayer
(Debtors version)
Our Father, who art in heaven
Hallowed be thy name,
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
Forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.
Lead us not into temptation.
But deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the Kingdom,
the Power and the Glory. Amen.
Response
Spirit of the living God,
Fall afresh on me;
Spirit of the living God,
Fall afresh on me; Melt me,
mold me, Fill me, use me.
Spirit of the living God,
Fall afresh on me.

Offering of Prayer (in unison)

Adapted from
The Roman Missal
Father in heaven, form in us
the likeness of your Son and
deepen his life within us.
Send us as witnesses of
gospel joy into a world
of fragile peace
and broken promises;
and touch the hearts of all
with your love that they
in turn may love one another.
In the name of Jesus,
who loved us first, we pray.
Amen.

Called as Partners
in Christ’s Service
# 343 in the Blue Hymnal
Called as partners in Christ's
service, Called to ministries of
grace, We respond with deep
commitment Fresh new lines of
faith to trace. May we learn the
art of sharing, Side by side and
friend with friend, Equal
partners in our caring To fulfill
God's chosen end.
Christ's example, Christ's
inspiring, Christ's clear call to
work and worth, Let us follow,
never faltering, Reconciling folk
on earth. Men and women,
richer, poorer, All God's people,
young and old, Blending human
skills together Gracious gifts
from God unfold.
Thus new patterns for Christ's
mission, In a small or global
sense, Help us bear each other's
burdens, Breaking down each
wall or fence. Words of comfort,
words of vision, Words of
challenge, said with care, Bring
new power and strength for
action, Make us colleagues,
free and fair.
So God grant us for tomorrow
Ways to order human life That
surround each person's sorrow
With a calm that conquers strife.
Make us partners in our living,
Our compassion to increase,
Messengers of faith, thus giving
Hope and confidence and peace.
