INTRODUCTION
 3G is generally considered applicable mainly to mobile
wireless.
 It is also relevant to fixed wireless and portable
wireless.
 A 3G system should be operational from any location on,
or over, the earth's surface.
DEFINITION OF 3G
 3G (or 3-G) is short for third-generation technology. It is used
in the context of mobile phone standards. The services
associated with 3G provide the ability to transfer
simultaneously both voice data (a telephone call) and non-
voice data (such as downloading information, exchanging
email, and instant messaging)
 3G refers to the third generation of developments in wireless
technology, especially mobile communications. The third
generation, as its name suggests, follows the first generation
(1G) and second generation (2G) in wireless communications.
It offers consistent services to mobile computer and phone
users wherever they are.
HISTORY OF 3G
First Mobile Radio Telephone 1924
3G has dominated the modern
world in just a few years.
Although the technology is
relatively new, there are already
so many devices taking
advantage of the functions. You
can use it regardless of
location, so work and leisure
becomes more efficient. You
have to know a little about 3G
history to know how unique.
FIRST GENERATION
 Advanced Mobile Phone Service (AMPS)
 Nordic Mobile Telephony (NMT)
 Total Access Communications System (TACS)

SECOND GENERATION
 Global Systems For Mobile Communications(GSM),
 Time Division Multiple Access(TDMA),
 Integrated Digital Enhanced Network(iDEN),
 Personal Digital Cellular(PDC),
 Code Division Multiple Access(CDMA )(cdmaOne),
 Personal Handy-Phone System(PHS)
3G
3G is the third Generation of mobile phone standards based on
the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) family of
standards "IMT-2000.
THIRD GENERATION
 Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA )
 TD-SCDMA
 CDMA2000 1X EV-DV
MIGRATION TO 3G
THE 3G ENVIRONMENT
THIRD GENERATION VISION
 Common spectrum worldwide
– 1920-1980 MHz and 2110-2170 MHz
 Wide range of new services
– Data centric (e..g.. Internet) and
multimedia oriented
– Data bit rates up to 2 Mb//s
 Seamless global roaming
 Improved security and performance
 Support a variety of terminal (from PDA to desktop)
 Intensive use of Intelligent Network (IN) technology

3G SYSTEMS DATA
CAPABILITIES
 Wideband “bit pipe” between communicating
parties
 A minimum speed of 2Mbit/s ,
 Maximum of 14.4Mbit/s for stationary users,
 348 kbit/s in a moving vehicle
 IP connectivity from end-to-end
– Data (& voice)
– Real-time & non real-time.

APPLICATIONS
 Customised Infotainment;
 Multimedia Messaging Service;
 Mobile Intranet/Extranet Access;
 Mobile Internet Access;
 Location-based Services;
 Video conferencing.
CONCLUSION
 3G is an exciting new technology that is being
incorporated into mobile devices across the
globe. Users are now able to make person-to-
person calls, download data and do a variety of
other tasks they never imagined possible all via
their 3G cell phones.
 The future is wireless.
