Information Sheet NO 1. 0
Power supply and other electronics circuit
• After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
• Define power supply.
• Name the main components in a common linear AC
to DC power supply and explain the purpose and
function of each.
• Define rectifier and name two common types.
• Name the component that transforms pulsating AC
into constant DC.
• Define ripple and identify its origins.
Definition of Terms:
1. A power supply is a device that supplies
electric power to an electrical load. The term
is most commonly applied to electric power
converters that convert one form of electrical
energy to another, though it may also refer to
devices that convert another form of energy
to electrical energy. ...
Definition of Terms:
•2. Alternating current - an electric
current that is continually varying in
value and reversing its direction of
flow at regular interval
•3. Anode - a positive electrode of
semiconductor device
Definition of Terms:
•3. Capacitance - a property that exists
whenever two conductors are
separated by insulating material,
permitting the storage of electricity
•4. Capacitor - a component designed
intentionally to have a definite amount
of capacitance.
Definition of Terms:
•4. Circuit - an arrangement of one or
more complete paths of electron flow.
•5. Conductor - a wire, cable, or other
body or medium that is suitable for
carrying electric current
•6. Current - the rate of transfer of
electricity from one point to another
Definition of Terms:
•7. De-soldering - a process of unsoldering
unwanted parts or components in the
circuit with the support of a soldering tool
•8. Dielectric material - a material that
serves as insulator because it has poor
electric conductivity
•9. Direct current - an electric current that
flows in one direction
Definition of Terms:
• 10. Ohmmeter - an instrument that measures the
amount of resistance in certain component or circuits
• 11. Resistance - the opposition that a component or
material offers to the flow current
• 12. Resistor - a component designed intentionally to
have a definite amount of resistance
• 13. Soldering - a process of joining two metals caused by
heat
• 14. Soldering technique - a strategy in which the solder
(lead) is being applied in a connection or in the printed
circuit board
Definition of Terms:
•15. Troubleshooting - identifying and repairing
faults in equipment
• 16. Voltage - the electrical pressure that exist
between two points and capable of
• 17. Producing a flow of current when a close circuit
is connected between the points.
• 18. Voltmeter - an instrument that measures the
amount of electromotive force in a component or
circuit.
Acronyms:

Power Supply
Power Supply
•All electronic circuits need a
power source to work.
•For electronic circuits made up
of transistors and/or ICs, this
power source must be a DC
voltage of a specific value.
Power Supply
•Power Supply Characteristics
•The input is the 120 volt 60 Hz
AC power line. Alternately, the
input may be 240 volt AC.
Power Supply
•The power supply converts the AC into
DC and provides one or more DC output
voltages. volt AC.
Power Supply
•Main circuits in most power
supplies.
Power Supply
•Power Supply
•The AC line is first passed through a low
pass filter of the form shown in figure.
Power Supply
•Transformer
•A transformer is commonly used to step
the input AC voltage level down or up.
Power Supply
•Rectifier
• The rectifier converts the AC sine wave
into a pulsating DC wave.
•Regulator
•• The regulator is a circuit that helps
maintain a fixed or constant output
voltage.
Power Supply

•DC-DC Converter
•Most modern power supplies also
contain one or more DC-DC converters.
Power Supply
•How Rectifiers Work
•The simplest form of rectifier is
the half wave rectifier shown.
•Only the transformer, rectifier
diode, and load (RL) are shown
without the filter and other
components.
Power Supply
• How Rectifiers Work
Power Supply
• Bridge Rectifier
• Another widely used rectifier is the bridge rectifier. It uses four diodes.
• This is called a full wave rectifier as it produces an output pulse for each half
cycle of the input sine wave.
Power Supply
• How the Filter Works
• A large capacitor is connected across the load resistor. This capacitor filters
the pulses into a more constant DC.

Power Supply
• Full-Wave Rectifier
Power Supply
•Ripple
• The capacitor does a good job of smoothing
the pulses from the rectifier into a more
constant DC.
•The Regulator
• Most regulators are ICs .
• These are feedback control circuits that
actually monitor the output voltage to detect
variations.
