What is GDP ?
● Gross Domestic Product or GDP is the total value of the goods and
services a country produces in a year.
● Total income of a country by its citizens in a year due to their
services and work.
● The current GDP of India as per 2018 is $2,716,750 million.
GDP Growth Declined
● GDP Growth declined to 6.6%.
● Sales of consumer durables and appliances slipped by 40%.
● Dip in sales also affects employment and thus loss of jobs in many
sectors.
Current Situation and Reasons
● “India’s stellar economic growth of the past two decades may not
have meant much for its citizens”, says a report.
● Poor implementation of government policies like Demonetisation
and Goods and Services Tax.

● Low level of national income and per capita income.
● Vast inequalities in income and wealth.
● Scarcity of capital and low rate of capital formation.
● Tremendous population pressure.

● Huge dependence of population on agriculture.
● Under-utilization of natural resources.

● Low level of technology.

Poverty : A socio-economic issue.

● Socio-economic issues: lack of education, cultural and religious

discrimination, overpopulation, unemployment and corruption.

● A result of discrimination or social injustice.

● Prevents people from accessing tools, resources and education they need to

improve their situation.

● Social injustice consolidates existing distribution gaps.

● Idea behind the right to a life of dignity,equity and security - Social


justice.
● A life free from poverty, violence, discrimination or human rights
violations.
● All people are included in society, and all can claim their rights to
healthcare, shelter, and education regardless of how poor or rich.

● Greater protection for the economic and social rights of the poor and
marginalised.
● Spaces for the active participation of various stakeholders in drawing up
framework that prioritise in reducing the problem.

sex or place of birth (Article 15).
● Equality of opportunity in matters of public employment (Article 16).
● Abolition of Untouchability (Article 17).
● Protection of certain rights regarding freedom of speech etc (Article
19).
● Protection of traffic in human beings and forced labour (Article 23).
● Prohibition of employment of children in factories or mines (Article
24).
Directive Principles of State Policy
● Promotion of welfare of the people (Article 38).
● Equal justice and free legal aid (Article 39A).
● Right to work, education and to public assistance in certain cases
(Article 41).
● Just and human conditions of work and maternity relief (Article 42).
● Living wages for workers (Article 43).
● Promotion of education and economic interests of the weaker
sections of the society (Article 46).

● One of the oldest legal systems in the world today
● it is based on the adversarial system
● Nearly 2.6 crore cases are pending in the district and subordinate
courts
● Around 25% of posts lying empty against the sanctioned strength of
22,454 judges
● India has one of the world’s largest number of undertrial prisoners
Flaws in Indian judicial system:
● Corruption in judiciary
● Backlog of pending cases
● Lack of transparency
● Hardships of the undertrials
● No interaction with the society
