Conceptual

Framework
Research is an academic activity that
requires a great deal of abstraction or
formation of concepts/ideas in your mind
about things in the sorroundings.This
activity in all its stages immerses you into
performing higher-order thinking
strategies of
interpreting,criticizing,applying and
creating.
What is a conceptual framework?

•It is a graphical presentation of

your concepts or ideas on the
basic structure/components of
your research as well as the
relationships of these elements
with one another.
•It is a graph or non-prose
material specifically a
schematic diagram that shows
a well-ordered elements of a
research.
•A conceptual
framework is a broad
outline or plan that give
shape to your research.
• Made up of varied
figures:lines,circles,boxes and
other marks or symbols
representing your concepts found
in the research
question,RRL,research
methodology and variables.
• It is a map showing the main
features of a plan or project showing
the relationship between the
variables in the research
study.Through the proper
connection of lines and arrows to
boxes and other codes symbolizing
your concepts about the research.
Purposes of
Conceptual
Framework
•1.It shows the
organization,order and
direction of your
research study.
•2.Through the schematic
diagram,it enables the
readers to obtain a general
understanding of the
research.
• 3.It gives people a notion on the
research activities you want to
perform,on the manner you want
to carry out the activities to prove
your familiarity with the research
topic/problem.
•4.It clarify concepts
and their relationship
with one another in
the research study.
•5.It gives a carefully
constructed
arrangement of the
components of your
study.
•6.The lines,symbols and
codes used enables the
reader to visualize a
comprehensive picture of
your study.
STEPS IN
CREATING A
CONCEPTUAL
FRAMEWORK
STEP 1:CHOOSE YOUR TOPIC

•Decide on what will be your

research topic. The topic
should be within your field of
specialization.
STEP 2:DO A LITERATURE REVIEW

• Review relevant and updated research on

the theme that you decide to work on
after scrutiny of the issue at hand.
Preferably use peer-reviewed and well-
known scientific journals as these are
reliable sources of information.
STEP 3:FOCUS THE IMPORTANT VARIABLES

•Identify the specific

variables described in the
literature and figure out
how these are related.
STEP 4: GENERATE THE CONCEPTUAL
FRAMEWORK

your conceptual framework using

• Build
your mix of the variables from the
scientific articles you have read. Your
problem statement serves as a reference in
constructing the conceptual framework.
In effect, your study will attempt to
answer a question that other researchers
have not explained yet.
Pointers in
Writing the
Conceptual
Framework
•A.Familiarize yourself
with the objective of
the conceptual
framework.
•B.Base the contents of the
conceptual framework on your
own understanding of the
elements and the relationships of
the variables in your study.
•C.See to it that all aspects
of the conceptual
framework are related to
the objective of the
research.
•D.Let others read your
conceptual framework
for comments or
feedbacks for
improvement purposes.
• All your plans,concepts/ideas about the
aspects of your research are shown and
clarified graphically and verbally in the
conceptual framework but there are
some components of the study,the
concrete and abstract are not thoroughly
explained by the conceptual framework.
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

•It explains the

theories,principles,general
izations and research
findings which have a
connection in your
research study.
• Through the theoretical
Framework,people know and
understand evidence-based
truths,concepts,speculations and
assumptions underlying each aspect
of the research and the relationships
of these features with one another.
Purposes of
Theoretical
Framework
•1.It gives a better view
of not only the main
problem of your
research but also to its
components.
•2.it provides the
foundation/basis
of the research
study.
•3.Through the theoretical
framework,it makes you
think well and accurately
of the varied aspects of
your study.
•4.The broad outline plan helps
the researcher to carry out the
research on the basis of the
theories,principles or
generalizations proven true by
facts and logical reasoning.
Strategies to
Develop a
Theoretical
Framework
1.Examine your research title and research
problem

•The research problem

anchors your entire study
and forms the basis from
which you construct your
theoretical framework.
2.Brainstorm about what you consider to be the
key variables in your research.

•Answer the question,

"What factors
contribute to the
presumed effect?"
3.Review related literature

•to find how scholars have

addressed your research
problem. Identify the
assumptions from which
the author(s) addressed
the problem.
4.List the variables that might be relevant to
your study

•Group these variables into

independent and
dependent categories.
5.Review key theories
•Review the theories that are
introduced to you in your course
readings and choose the theory
that can best explain the
relationships between the key
variables in your study.
6.Discuss the assumptions
or propositions of this
theory and point out their
relevance to your research.
