 Presence of unwanted materials (mud) in cement slurry.
 Changes various physical properties of cement.
 WHERE: Usually takes place when cement contacts mud
during emplacement of cement behind the casing.
 WHEN: After the Cement reaches the annular space.

Mud Additives Effects on Cement
Barite Increases density and Compressive strength decreases

Caustic Acts as an accelerator

Calcium Compounds Decreases density

Diesel Oil Decreases density

Thinners Acts as retarders

 SPACER:
 Separates mud and cement.

 Compatible with both mud and cement.

 Spacer volume = 500ft in annulus.

 A full sized length of casing at the bottom of the
casing string usually left full of cement.
 Ensures good cement remains outside of casing.

 Reduce the risk of over displacing the cement.

The degree of cement diffusion also depends
largely on pipe centralisation. Cement can easily enter the
mud zone in the wide side of an off-centred casing. So, it is
highly recommended for the use of Centralizers to prevent
contamination and for better cementing job.
