IDENTIFYING THE

INQUIRY
AND
STATING THE PROBLEM
Prepared by:
Jolene P. Tabat
Learning Objectives:
O 1. Design a research project
related to daily life (CS_RS11-IIIc-e-1)
O 2. Writes a research title (CS_RS11-
IIIc-e-2)
O 3. Describe the
justifications/reasons for conducting
the research
Direction: Identify the
topic being presented
in every picture.
Guidelines in Choosing a Research
Topic:
O Interest in the subject matter
O Availability of information
O Timeliness and relevance of the
topic
O Limitations on the subject
O Personal resources
Research Topics
to be
Avoided
Controversial Topics
OThese are topics that
depend greatly on the
writer’s opinion, which
may tend to be biased or
prejudicial.
Highly Technical
Subjects
OResearching on topics that
require an advanced study,
technical knowledge, and
vast experience is a very
difficult task.
Hard-to-Investigate Subjects
O A subject is hard to investigate
if there are no available
reading materials about it and
if such materials are not up-to-
date.
Too Broad Subjects
O Topics that are too broad will
prevent you from giving a
concentrated or an in-depth
analysis of the subject matter
of the paper.
Too Narrow Subjects
O These subjects are so limited
or specific that an extensive or
thorough searching or
reading for information about
these is necessary.
Vague Subjects
O Titles beginning with
indefinite adjectives such as
several, many, and some are
vague enough to decrease
the readers’ interests and
curiosity.

Guide Questions:
1. What are the images all about?
2. Which of the two is a good
research title for the illustration?
Why?
3. What do you think is the purpose
of writing the title?
Writing a Research Title
Research title refers to
the issue focus on the
study. The selection of the
title is based on what you
are interested to study.
The title must contain the
subject matter of the study,
the locale of the study, the
population involved, and
period when data are gathered
or will be gathered.
It must be a brief and concise
as possible. Avoid using the
terms “An Analysis of,” “A
study of,” “An Investigation of,”
and the like.
If the title contains more
than one line, it must be
written like inverted
pyramid, all words in
capital letters.
Example:
THE TEACHING OF SCIENCE IN THE HIGH
SCHOOLS OF PROVINCE AS PERCEIVED
BY THE SCIENCE TEACHERS AND
STUDENTS DURING THE
SCHOOL YEAR
1989-1990
A good title contains less than 15
words and it contains variable of the
study. It describes the subject and
contains statistical words like
relationship, comparison, etc. The
title is more of a label for the
research and not a written complete
sentence
Keep it simple, brief and eye-
catching
O Avoid: Drug XYZ has an effect of muscular
contraction for an hour in snails of
Achatina fulcia species

O Better: Drug XYZ induces muscular

contraction in Achatina fulcia snails
Avoid abbreviations and
jargon
O Avoid: MMP expression profiles
cannot distinguish between normal
and early osteoarthritic synovial
fluid.
O Better: Matrix metalloproteinase
protein expression profiles cannot
distinguish between normal and
early osteoarthritic synovial fluid.
Directions: Check the title
that appears to be the best
in terms of narrowing
down a broad topic.
QUIZ!
Directions: Directions: The
following research topics are
to be avoided. Identify the
reason by putting a check
under the column of the right
descriptive word for each
number.
