Dindigul

Dindigul district is bound by Trichy, Karur, and Tirupur districts in the north, and Sivaganga
districts in the East, Madurai in south, and Coimbatore and Theni districts and Kerala in the
west.
The district headquarter is at Dindigul town, about 420 km from Madras and 100 km from
Tiruchirapalli, which is towards its north-east.
Dindigul is located beside the Sirumalai hills.
Weather of Dindigul

The summer season starts from March and extends up until July.
Unlike in Kerala, rain in Dindigul does not start in June.
The monsoon winds coming from the south–west i.e. the Arabian sea are
somewhat blocked by the Western Ghats.
As such, January and February are the only dry winter months in Dindigul.

Culture of Dindigul

The north Indian festival of Mahashivratri finds its counterpart in Dindigul by


the name Meenakshi Tirukkalyanam.
Recently, the Jalikattu sport of man fighting a bull, which is practised
during the harvest festival of Makar Sankranti in January.

History of Dindigul

Dindigul has a history dating back to 2000 years during which it was ruled
by various South Indian kingdoms like the Cholas, Pallavas, and Pandyas.
It was also captured by the Delhi Sultanate in the fifteenth century.
Muthukrishna Nayak built its namesake fort in 1605 AD after becoming
king in 1602 AD.
In 1742, it was again captured by the Kingdom of Mysore. Over time,
Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan fought two wars with the newcomer East
India Company to get control of the fort.
After the 1857 mutiny, they shifted their headquarters to Madurai and
Dindigul was reduced to the status of a taluka of Madurai District.

Overview of Dindigul

Although it has been inhabited for two thousand years, modern structures were mainly
erected in Dindigul during the time it enjoyed being the zonal headquarters of the East
India Company - from 1792 to 1869.
Tourists will find relics of the colonial era like the Saint Joseph Mission Hospital and Saint
Mary’s School, which are also fine specimens of architecture and would attract history and
art buffs alike.
Some of the other tourist attractions in Dindigul include the ancient temples in the city and
the Dindigul fort.
The place is also dotted with numerous mosques, the most notable being, the beautiful
Begampur mosque beside the Fort.

The Dindigul city corporation maintains 131.733 km of roads.


The town has 21.66 km (13.46 mi) concrete roads, 98.311 km bituminous roads, 9.352 km
earthen roads and 2.41 km cut stone pavements.

There are three national highways,


• NH 44 (largest highway in India) connecting Dindigul to Madurai
• NH 45A connecting Chennai to Kanyakumari
• NH 83 Coimbatore to Nagapattinam via Oddanchatram, Palani, Dindigul, Tiruchirapalli,
Thiruvarur via the city.

There are several places of interest in Dindigul District.


• Palani hills with the famous temple of Lord Muruga Dhandayuthapani Temple
• Begampur Mosque
• Sirumalai Hill resort
• Parapalar Dam
• Varathamanathi dam
• Mariamman temple
• Nadupatti Anjaneyar temple

The famous Kodaikanal Hill Station is also located in Dindigul District.


The reserved forest area of the district consists of 84, 565 hectares, which is rich in flora and
fauna like Seehakai, Nellikai, Bluegum and Pine and Gaur, Nilgiri langur, panther, barking
deer respectively.
Peranai and Sirumalai are the two fine picnic spots of this district.

There are nine dams namely.,


• Palar Porundalar
• Varathamanathi
• Kuthiraiaru in Palani Block
• Parappalar and Nanganchiar in Oddanchatram Block
• Maruthanathi, Kamarajar Sagar in Athoor Block
• Mavoor in Nilakottai Block
• Kudaganar in Vedasandur Block

Nilakkottai town is famous for Brass Vessels and Jewellery.


Nilakottai Taluk is famous for the growing and marketing of flowers and Grapes.
Smart City of Dindigul

Dindigul City is located in the central part of Tamil Nadu famous for its traditional lock
manufacturing industry.
The City has been shortlisted by Ministry of Urban Development as one of the 100 smart
cities in India.
The City covers an area of 14.01 sq.km and divided into 48 wards with the population of
2,07,225.
Dindigul Municipal Corporation is preparing the Smart City Proposal that will provide smart
solutions to the urban infrastructure issues.

1. NEW MOFFUSIL BUS STAND: to be opened whereas Trichy Via Chennai, Karur Via
Bangalore, Palani, Coimbatore, Madurai, Kodaikanal, Kambam -Theni via Kerala can
be placed at Raja Lake and Poramboke land surrounding it which is now using as tent
of illegal activities. It can be used in a prosperous and efficient way and lot of traffic jam
can be prevented, time and fuel expenses can be saved mutually for concern of local
citizens and government transits and as well as the city limit expands is an benefit,
amenities should be mandatorily provided and maintained without compromise.

2. NEW FLY OVER: to be constructed, Bypass connecting Karur to Dindigul should construct
an fly over to avoid traffic jam at time of railway gate timings a lag in traffic and there is
chance of accident which make them hurry in crossing the railway gate, so a new
flyover must be constructed for foreseeing and compensate the today and future
needs. Construction works should be completed on a war foot basis without relaxation
in quality of work and raw materials used.

3. MEDICAL COLLEGE AND RESEARCH INSTITUTE: to be constructed for the benefit of


Dindigul district students. I also submit for your information Gandhigramam University
which is being globally noted for its researches and herbal medicinal researches to be
well funded and equipped for future endeavors.
