A Data Center is a facility that centralizes an

organization’s IT operations and equipment,

and where it stores, manages, and disseminates
its data. Data centers house a network’s most
critical systems and are vital to the continuity
of daily operations. Consequentially, the
security and reliability of data centers and their
information is a top priority for organizations.
 Data Center comprises of following
Facilities.

 Electrical Power
 Cooling
 Security/Surveillance and monitoring
24 by forever demand of Electrical Power in Data
Center is achieved with the following.
 K-Electric Commercial Supply
 H.V Room
 Transformers
 L.V Room
 Generators
 UPS
 STS
 PDU
 Rectifier
 DC DB
 K-Electric provides 3 phase, 11 KV Electric
power to the Data Center which further goes to
the H.V room
 Incoming from K-Electric comes in the H.V
room through Vacuum Circuit Breaker (VCB)
of 11 KV and 630 A. and further goes to the
transformers. H.V
room contains
panels for
switching.
 1500 KVA each, Transformer Step-Down 11KV
to 220V Phase voltage and 380 Line to Line
voltages and output goes to
L.V Room
Here incoming from
transformers or
Generators goes
through series of panels
which improves Power
Factor, Synchronize
power and distributes
power to the UPS, Main
PDU’s, HVAC,
Building AC’s, Lighting
systems
In case of Failure of Primary power Supply
Diesel Generators of 1540 KVA each, gives
power to the Data Center Facility

In case of fluctuation or
failure of Primary power
6 UPS of 200 KVA
supplies the power to the
Computers, Servers and
Network Devices up to
15 minutes which
compensates the time of
Starting of generators
and take over the main
power supply
UPS have two inputs Primary power (K-
Electric/Diesel Generators) and Battery Banks.
When primary power is available UPS take income
from Primary Power charges batteries and in
absence of primary power it takes input from
Battery bank. The output of UPS is connected to
PDU’s through Static Transfer Switch (STS)
STS takes input from UPS,
switches/combines UPS
power and transfer it to
PDU’s which distributes
power to the network
devices
PDU’s distributes power
to the server RACK’s
through an Isolation
Transformer, which
isolates input from any
fault at output
Some of the network
devices require DC inputs
for this purpose rectifier
rectifies AC to DC and
meets the requirement
DC DB’s distributes the DC power to DC
operating devices

Cooling is one of the most important factor in
data center. Temperature of Data Center
needed to be maintained at specific range
regardless of outside temperature.

There are two types of cooling in Data Centers.

 Precision Cooling (for Equipment Area)

 General Cooling (For Overall Building)
 Equipment area of data center needs precision
cooling which includes temperature and
humidity controlling for this purpose Heating
Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) are
used. In PTCL-DC 6 HVAC of 28 tons and 4
HVAC of 16 tons are installed which maintains
temperature at 20-23 degree Celsius and
humidity at 45-55%

 LD system comprises of a wire placed under
raised floor and covers the whole equipment
are so that if any leakage occurs from any
HVAC anywhere it shows an alarm on the LD
Panel.

4 tons both floor
mounted and ceiling
mounted are installed
inside the building

Outers
 To make Data Center Secure, from
unauthorized access and disaster, following
equipments are used.

 Access Control System

 Fire Alarm System
 Fire Suppression System
 CCTV
 BMS
 RFID Cards and Biometric System is installed
at every entrance of Data Center to ensure
authorized access only.
 VESDA very early
warning aspirating
smoke detection.
Through
continuous air
sampling VESDA
provide the earliest
possible warning
of an impending
fire hazard
 Data Centers are commonly protected by either
FM 200 or NAF S125 or both gases the
cylinders located inside equipment area are
controlled remotely.

 CCTV cameras are installed on every entrance
and all vital areas of Data Center to have video
footage of every tragedy. Cameras are
connected with Digital Video Recorder (DVR)
with stores recording in hard drives. Hard
drives have storage capacity of more then three
months so that you can see any happening in at
least 3 months.
Cameras
Most of the cameras are PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom)
which enables viewer with a wide range of
view of a place where camera is located.
 BMS is a software which shows the
connectivity of all other facilities like UPS,
Generators, Fire alarm, temperature sensors,
HVAC, Liquid Detection etc on a single LCD if
any abnormality happens one can see it from
NOC(Network Operation Control) and can
perform action either on BMS or going to the
infected place.

 Other general facilities contains
 Lightening arrestor system
 Raised flooring
 False Ceiling
 It is a device used on Power Systems above
1000V to Protect other Equipment from
Lightning and Switching Surges.
 Raised floor is a data center construction model
in which a higher floor is constructed above the
building's original concrete slab floor, leaving
the open space created for wiring or cooling
infrastructure

Mero Raised Floor Perforated tiles for

cooling through
 In Data Centers false ceiling separates hot air
from cold air and gives space for lighting
cables.
