students leave school
unprepared for civic life.

The Philippine president sees drug

dealing and addiction as “major
obstacles to the Philippines’ economic
and social progress,” says John
Gershman, an expert on Philippine
politics.
Keeping a Promise

When Rodrigo Duterte campaigned

for president …. He promised a
large-scale crackdown on dealers
and addicts, similar to the
crackdown that he engaged in when
he was mayor of Davao, one of the
Philippines’ largest cities on the
southern island of Mindanao.
According to a 2012 United
Nations report, among all the
countries in East Asia, the
Philippines had the highest rate
of methamphetamine abuse.

Human Rights
Human rights are the basic rights
and freedoms that belong to every
person in the world, from birth
until death. ... These basic rights
are based on shared values like
dignity, fairness, equality, respect
and independence. These values
are defined and protected by law.
(Jun 19, 2019)
United Nations
Human rights are rights inherent to all
human beings, regardless of race, sex,
nationality, ethnicity, language, religion,
or any other status. Human rights
include the right to life and liberty,
freedom from slavery and torture,
freedom of opinion and expression, the
right to work and education, and many
more. Everyone is entitled to these
rights, without discrimination.
United Nations
The information presented in the
World Drug Report 2018 illustrates
the unprecedented magnitude and
complexity of the global drug
markets. The adverse health
consequences caused by drug use
remain significant, drug-related
deaths are on the rise and there
are ongoing, concentrated opioid
epidemics.
United Nations
This situation calls for renewed
efforts to support the prevention
and treatment of drug use and the
delivery of services aimed at
reducing the adverse health
consequences of drug use
Young people need to be made
aware not only of the medical but
also of the socioeconomic harm
associated with drug use.

The Trolley Problem
A runaway trolley is heading down the tracks
toward five workers who will all be killed if the
trolley proceeds on its present course. Adam is
standing next to a large switch that can divert
the trolley onto a different track. The only way
to save the lives of the five workers is to divert
the trolley onto another track that only has
one worker on it. If Adam diverts the trolley
onto the other track, this one worker will die,
but the other five workers will be saved.
