What is communication?
-process of sharing and conveying
messages or information from one
person to another within and across
channels, contexts, media, and
cultures( MacCornack, 2014)

What is public speaking?


Public speaking is the process and act
of speaking or giving a lecture to a group
of people in a structured, deliberate
manner intended to inform, influence, or
entertain a listening audience.
Elements of Communication/ Public Speaking
 Speaker – the source of information or message,
 Message- the information, ideas, or thoughts conveyed in words or
actions,
 Encoding- the process of converting the message into words, actions, or
other forms that the speaker understands
 Channel- the medium or the means, such as personal or non- personal,
verbal or non-verbal, in which the encoded message of the speaker is
conveyed.
 Decoding –the process of interpreting the encoded message of the
speaker by the receiver
 Receiver- the recipient of the message, or someone who decodes the
message
 Feedback- the reactions, responses, or information provided by the
receiver
 2 kinds : verbal and non- verbal
 Context – the environment where communication takes place
 Barrier/s – the factors that affect the flow of communication
What is Rhetoric ?
 Etymology
 From the Greek word “RHETORIKOS” which means “ oratorical.”
 RHETORIKOS is derived from “ RHETOR” meaning “ public speaker” which in turn comes
from the verb “ERO” meaning “to speak” or “ to say.”
 By Informal Definition
 A technique of using language effectively and persuasively
in spoken or written form.
 It is an art of discourse, which studies and employs various
methods to convince, influence,

 The art of using language with persuasive effect. It moves
audiences with logic ( right reason), emotion, and credibility.
Rhetorical Triangle
 a tool that helps speakers/writers formulate their thoughts so they can
clearly present their position in a persuasive way
 It is composed of three persuasive appeals : logos, ethos , and pathos
 Ethos (speaker)
 Greek term for Ethics
 Represents the credibility of the person making the communication
 Established through a variety of factors including status awareness,
professionalism, research , celebrity endorsement
 Pathos (Audience)
 Greek term for Emotion
 Made to represent how an audience feels or experience a message
 Makes a person feel excited, sad, angry, motivated, jealous, or any other
number of emotions that may persuade them ( the audience) to act based on
what you say.
 Logos (Message)
 Greek term for Logic
 Made to represent the facts, research, and other message elements that
provide proof or evidence to a claim.
 Use logos to convince audience that what they are hearing or seeing is well-
researched, well- built or otherwise worth their time.
