WHAT IS MEANT BY SOCIAL REFORM
MOVEMENT ?

 Certain social & political changes brought in society for


betterment through collective action are generally
known as SOCIAL REFORM MOVEMENTS .

 It basically aims for the betterment and development


of the society .
FOUR BASIC ELEMENTS OF A SOCIAL MOVEMENT:

 It is a collective behaviour.
 Social movements extend beyond a single event or
community.
 Social movements involve systematic efforts.
 Social movements are change-oriented.

RAJA RAMMOHAN ROY [ 1772-1833 ]

 Born onMay 22, 1772 into an elite Bengali Hindu family.


 Popularly known as the "MAKER OF MODERN INDIA" or "FATHER
OF MODERN INDIA".
 He was a great scholar.
 Founder of the BRAHMO SAMAJ at Kolkata in 1828.
 Co-founded the Calcutta Unitarian Society..
The title 'RAJA' was bestowed upon him by the Mughal emperor,
AKBAR II.
 He died of meningitis on september 27, 1833 in Bristol.
HIS MAIN FOCUS WAS TOWARDS THE EVILS
WHICH HAD SURROUNDED THE HINDU SOCIETY
OF THE TIMES, SUCH AS :

 He criticised idol worship of hindus and tried to prove his point


through the verses of the vedas.
But the main contribution for which he is still remembered was his
relentless efforts in abolishing the practice of SATI PRATHA.
On august 20, 1828, Raja Rammohan Roy established the BRAHMO
SAMAJ an organisation and a movement with the objective of
promoting monotheism, criticising idol worshipping, opposing
widespread Brahmanism and uplifting the pitiful condition of
womens etc.
MAHATAMA JYOTIRAO PHULE [1827-1890]
 Was a thinker, activist, social reformer, writer, philosopher,
scholar, theologist and editor.
 Born on april 11, 1827 in Katgun, a village in satara , Maharashtra.
 On 24th september,1873, Phule formed 'SATYA SHODHAK
SAMAJ'[society of seekers of truth] with the objective of
liberating the Dalits.
 He supported widow remarriage & started a home for upper caste
widows in 1854.
He devoted 40 years of his life fighting for the rights of the
BAHUJANS.
E.V. RAMASWAMY NAICKER [1879-1973]

An indian social reformer, who founded the 'Self-respect


Movement' and ' Dravidar Kazhagam'
Popularly known as PERIYAR I.i.e., 'respected one' or an 'elder'.
 He worked for depressed throughout his life.
 He worked upon Rationalism, Self-respect, Women's rights &
Eradication of Caste.
Also worked for the upliftment of the rural communities.
