 South Korea is a country in Eastern
Asia occupying the southern half of the
Korean Peninsula, in the north east
region of Asia.
 The capital city is SEOUL.

 The official name of South Korea is the


“Republic of Korea” in English and
“Daehan Minguk” in Korean writing.

 South Korea is mostly surrounded by water
and has 2,413 kilometers of borders of
coastline along the three seas ;
1.Yellow Sea (West)
2. East China Sea (South)
3. Sea of Japan/East Sea (East)
 Geographically, South Korea`s land mass is
approximately 100,032 square kilometers.

 The only country with a land border to South Korea
is North Korea, lying to the north wit 238 kilometers
of border running along the Korean Demilitarized
Zone.
 The Korean Demilitarized Zone is a heavily guarded,
4000 meter wide strip of land that runs along the
demarcation line established by the Korean Armistice
Agreement.
 Lastly, South Korean`s 2019 population is estimated at
51,225,308 people.

 South Korea has a long history that dates back to
ancient times. There is a myth that it was founded
in 2333 B.C.E. by the God-King Tangun.

 It`s early history was dominated by China and


Japan.

 In1910, after the weakening Chinese power over


the area, Japan began to colonial rule over Korea
which lasted about 35 years.

 At the end of the World War II in 1945,
Japan surrendered to the Allies.
 August 15, 1948, the Republic of Korea
(South Korea) was officially founded.
 September 9, 1948, the Democratic
People`s Republic of Korea (North Korea)
was established.

 June 25, 1950, North Korea invaded South
Korea and began the Korean War. Three
years later, peace negotiations ended on July
27, 1953 at Panmunjom and formed the
Demilitarized Zone of Korea.
 Lastly, the first president of South Korea is
Syngman Rhee but now, the 2019 president
is Moon Jae-in.

 Korea is one of the Asian Nation with a
significant Protestant presence.
 Protestanism or Protestant Christianity
(19.7%) is the second-largest form of
Christianity with collectively between 800
million and more than 900 million adherents
worldwide or nearly 40% of all Christians.
Protestants in Korea occupy a central position
in the country`s politics, society, and culture.

 Korean Buddhism (15.5%) is distinguished from
other forms of Buddhism by its attempt to resolve
what it sees as inconsistencies in Mahayana
Buddhism. Early Korean monks believed that the
traditions they received from foreign countries
were internally inconsistent. That is why they
developed a new holistic approach which is called
“Tongbulgyo” (Interpenetrated Buddhism).

 It arrived in Korea in the 4th century C.E.

 Catholism or Catholic Christianity(7.9%) was
first introduced during the late Joseon Dynasty
period by Confucian scholars who encountered it in
China. It is the largest religion in South Korea.
Government surveys showed that the 28% of
Koreans are Christians with 11% being Catholics and
18% being Protestants.
 Others (0.8%) are members of other religions
including Won Buddhism, Confucianism, Cheondoism
and others.

The First Republic and Korean War

- The establishment of the first republic of South Korea was


ruled by the Syngman Rhee.

- At this time, the economy was largely agricultural , through


the Farmland Reform Act of 1950.

- Existed for only one year, but had a great effect on economy
and history of South Korea through ideology and policy.

- And it is ruled by Prime Minister Chang Myon and he is


promoting amity and economic cooperation with Japan

1963-1972
The Third Republic
- South Korea received 800 million US dollar from Japan.

- Government used this money to accomplish a self-supporting


economy

- Saemaeul Movement in order to develop rural areas.


1972 - 1981
The Fourth Republic

- During the fourth republic, government backing heavy


industries, electronics, and steel industries flourished.

- Freedom for leaders in the industrial sector without feeling


constrained by budget due to government commitment.
1981 - 1997
Market Structuring

- By the end of 1995, South Korea had established itself as the


eleventh largest economy in the world.
- Junta harassed the wealthy for funding
- December 1996 , President Kim Young Sam announced that
South Korea had gained for its economy by joining the
organization for Economic Cooperation and Development,
consisting of top industrial nations.

The Currency Crisis

- South Korea faced economic disaster in the form of the 1997


Asian Financial Crisis

- Kim Young Sam , the first nonmilitary president in thirty


years, failed to protect the economy at the time.

- Took over the office with considerable damage to repair

- The country paid its debt and summoned the problem.

- Thus South Koreas financial crisis was severe but relatively


brief compared to other countries who experienced similar
situations.

- The firm was started in 1947 as a construction business by

with the LG Petrochemical in 2017.
