Cigarette Smoking
GATEWAY DRUGS
• Such as cigarettes and alcohol that are legal drugs
which a non-drug user might try. This may lead
him/her to more dangerous drugs such as marijuana
and shabu.
• Tobacco is said to be the “smoking gun” while alcohol
is the “most dangerous gateway drug”.
• Two(2) out of five(5) teenagers aged 13 to 15 yrs. Old
smoke cigarettes. (NYC, March 16, 2012)
Tobacco- is a tall, leafy plant,
originally grown in South and
Central America, but now
cultivated throughout the
world.

Nicotiana tabacum - called


common tobacco is preferred
for producing present day
cigarettes.
According to World Health
Organization(WHO), tobacco
smoking and chewing is the
second leading cause of death
around the world.
Around 43 chemicals of
carcinogens are found in
tobacco.
Carcinogens – are substances
which causes cancer.
Nicotine – The addictive drug in
tobacco products like cigarettes
is a poisonous stimulant.
Stimulant drug increases the
central nervous system activity.
Three smokes produced by cigarette smoking:

1. Mainstream Smoke – refers specifically to the smoke that a


smoker directly inhales.
2. Side stream smoke – the smoke that comes out of the
lighted end of a cigarette or pipe. Also called second-hand
smoke(SHS) or environmental tobacco smoke(ETS).
3. Third-hand Smoke – smoke left for a long time on sofa,
beddings, pillow and other objects. Also called residual
tobacco smoke(RTS) settles along with dust and can lasts
for months.
Effects of Smoking
• Can cause heart attacks and stroke. Some smokers end up having
their limbs amputated.
• Smoking causes around one in five deaths from heart diseases.
• An estimated 443, 000 deaths each year caused by excessive cigarette
smoking.
• Smoking causes an estimated 90% of lung cancer deaths among men
and 80 % among women.
Smoking causes the following cancers:
• Acute myeloid leukemia
• Bladder cancer
• Cervical cancer
• Cancer of the esophagus
• Kidney cancer
• Lung cancer
• Pancreatic cancer
• Cancer of the larynx

- Smoking inside a public building or an enclosed public place including
public vehicles or other transport vehicles is prohibited under this Act.

Alcohol
Alcohol
- is a colourless , bitter-tasting substance that humans have
been consuming since the ancient times.
Blood-alcohol concentration/level- is the amount of alcohol that entered in
the bloodstream can be measured in percentage.

3 Types of Alcohol
1. Isopropyl
2. Methanol
3. Ethanol
