INTRODUCTION
• Ozone or trioxygen, is a triatomic molecule consisting of three oxygen
atoms. It is an allotrope of oxygen that is much less stable than the
diatomic allotrope (02).

• Ozone is formed by combining an oxygen atom with oxygen molecule (O2).

• Ozone is highly corrosive and colourless gas and powerful oxidant

capable of oxidising organic and inorganic compounds in water.
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF OZONE
• Formula : O3

• Colour : Colourless gas

• Melting point : -193° C

• Boiling point : -112° C

• Density : 2.14 g/ltr

OTHER PROPERTIES OF OZONE
• Ozone at atmospheric conditions is highly unstable and
reduces to oxygen.

• It has a half life of 20 minutes in water and 60 minutes in air.

• Ozone is 1.5 times heavier than oxygen.

• Stronger germicidal properties than chlorine .

OZONIZATION
• Ozone contains high oxidizing power. So it is used for disinfection.

• Ozone contains one Oxygen molecule (02) and one nascent oxygen (O).

• The nascent oxygen reduces organic matters which present in water.

• The ozone dose is 2 to 3 mg/l.

• Need contact period as 10 minutes.

PROCESS
• Oxygen concentrator :- Purified oxygen generated from atmospheric air by
pressure swing adsorption principle.

• Ozone generator : - Purified oxygen is passed through ozone generator

where corona discharge within ozone cell converts a part of oxygen gas into
ozone gas.

• Ozone gas mass transfer system : - Ozone gas is injected and mass
transferred into water by venture injectors.
PROCESS
• Ozone reaction tank : - Ozone reaction tank is a state of art mass
transfer and reaction tank for dissolving ozone as well as carry out
the oxidation reactions of the organic and inorganic substances.
Treated water can then be transferred further for process or
application .

Note: Ozone dosage in mg/l depends upon the waste water quality.
ADVANTAGE OF OZONE SYSTEM
• Ozone system is compact and space requirement is less.

• Sludge can be reduced up to 99 % and above.

• Maintenance and labour costs are low.

• There are no chemical costs when treated with ozone .

• Very low cost on civil works.

WHY WE USE OZONE IN PLACE OF CHLORINE ?
• Ozone is a very powerful oxidising agent and hence a very
potent disinfectant.

• It is over 3000 times more powerful than chlorine in its disinfective

property and over 50 times more powerful in its oxidative
property.
WHY WE USE OZONE IN PLACE OF CHLORINE ?
• It will not produce objectionable tastes and odours like chlorine.

• While undergoing reduction reaction, ozone reduces to oxygen,

which makes it one of the most environment friendly treatment
reactions.
DISINFECTION PROPERTY
• The treatment of water with chemicals to kill bacteria is called as
disinfection.

• Sterilization, is boiling of water before using for domestic purposes.

• Boiling kills disease germs of cholera and typhoid within few minutes.
DISINFECTION PROPERTY
• Ozonization and Chlorination method are the principal methods
used for disinfection of water.

• Disinfection process removes microorganisms from drinking water.

• Ozone inactivates RNA and DNA of the viruses.

COMMON MICRO-ORGANISMS IN WATER
• Bacteria such as E.coli, leptospira species , salmonella
species , shigella and vibrio chollrae.

• Protozoa such as Balantidium coli Cryptospiridium

parvum, Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lambia.

• Viruses such as Entero viruses, Hepatitis A virus and Rota

virus.
APPLICATION
• Drinking water treatment such as de coloration, taste/odour removal.

• Waste water treatment processes such as elimination of phenols,

cyanides and sludge reduction .

• Water treatment process to remove bacteria, viruses, organic and

inorganic pollutants and hazardous chemicals.
APPLICATION

• It is also used in treatment of Process water .

• Product polishing such as chemical modification of food and self-life

improvement of food.
ADVANTAGES
• Removes Pesticides & Insecticides

• Oxidizes All Organic Impurities

• Oxidizes Inorganics to Precipitate

• Strong Disinfectant

• Improves Taste
ADVANTAGES
• Eliminates Any Present Odour

• Increased Self Life Keeps Lines & Equipments Disinfected

• Provides Overall Bacterio-static Condition

• Disinfects New Molded Bottles & Caps

• Refill Jar Disinfection & Rinsing

DISADVANTAGES
• It is costly to manufacture .

• It is not quite suitable to highly turbid waters.

CONCLUSION
Ozonation has been successfully applied for water disinfection and
can kill most bacteria viruses and protozoa. However, there is no
residual disinfection effect and ozonation is more expensive than
chlorination. Ozonation is a suitable process to degrade organic
pollutants .
