Processing and Reviewing ADCP

Measurements in WinRiver II

U.S. Department of the Interior

U.S. Geological Survey

Steps of Processing and Reviewing
1. QA/QC tests
2. Composite tabular
3. Stick ship track
4. Velocity contour
5. Time series graph
6. Extrapolation
7. Discharge summary
8. Lock
9. Summary Report
QA/QC
• ADCP Test Error Free?
• Compass Calibration
• Calibration and evaluation completed
• < 1 degree error in evaluation
• Important for Loop and GPS
• Moving-Bed Test
• Loop
• Requires compass calibration
• Use LC to evaluate
• Stationary
• Duration and deployment
• Use SMBA to evaluate
Composite Tabular
• Number of Ensembles
• > 180 (unless stream is so narrow that it is not
possible to move smooth and steady and
collect this many, if some collect more
transects to increase total samples
• Lost Ensembles
• Communications error
• Bad Ensembles
• Distribution more important than
percentage
• Distribution evaluated in velocity contour
plot
• Reasonable temperature
Offsets

• Transducer draft
correct?
• MagVar entered? Is it
reasonable? (only
needed for Qm’s made
using GPS [GGA or VTG]
as reference)
Stick Ship Track
• Check with appropriate reference (BT, GGA, VTG)
• Track and sticks in correct direction
• Magnetic variation (GPS)
• Heading time series
• Sticks representative of flow
• Cycle through range in depths (Page Up / Page Down)
• WT thresholds
• Irregular ship track?
• BT thresholds
• BT 4-beam solutions
Velocity Contour
• Patterns in velocity distribution
• Non uniform
• Unnatural
• WT Thresholds
• Spikes in bottom profile
• Turn on Screen Depth
• Distribution of invalid and
unmeasured areas
• Large unmeasured areas can cause
can greatly decrease measurement
quality
Thresholds can screen out data
Thresholds to screen out errors

Water Track
Water Track Error Velocity Threshold=0.5
Error Velocity +
Threshold=0.5 Bottom Track Error Velocity =0.2
Set Thresholds Based on Data
Water Speed Boat Speed Time Series
• Compare boat speed and water speed
• Look for consistency, patterns, spikes, dropouts
• Spikes that occur in BOTH water speed and boat speed are like from a boat
speed error (bottom track or GPS) – filter bottom track errors using bottom track
thresholds
• Look for lagging GPS vs Bottom Track
Error Velocity Contour
• Look for stripes that may indicate ambiguity problems
• Missing data that may indicate 3-beam solutions
• Random high values may indicate turbulence
• Can be used to determine possible values needed to filter out invalid data
Ambiguity Errors

Applying changes to multiple Transects in a
Measurement
• If a threshold is reasonable for one transect, it should be applicable to all
transects in a measurement
• To Apply a configuration value to multiple transects, right click in the box
that was changed. A small window appears with two choices.
• Select the most appropriate choice
• Notice that the font color changes to blue
• Transects need to be reprocessed for changes to take effect.

Screen Depths
Edge Estimates
Discharge page Edge Estimates page

• Left and right edge types

• Verify Shore distances
Edge Estimates
• Are the estimated edge discharges reasonable for this section?
Extrapolation Method

• Evaluate Extrapolation
Method
• Loads .pd0 (transect data
file)
• Must enter draft
Apply Extrap Observations In WinRiver II
• Must enter
discharge method
and power coeff
into WinRiver, apply
to all transects, and
reprocess
Discharge Summary (F12)
• Look at discharges for all transects
• Look for directional bias (GPS used with correct Mag Var?)
• Are edge discharges or top/bottom Q’s radically different?
• Consistent Width, area, boat speed, flow speed, flow dir.
• Reciprocal pairs used?
Outliers highlighted in red

• Example of Qm where one or more transects are > 5% different from

the mean discharge for the Qm
Subsectioning Data Files – Typically Unnecessary

Area to
be sub-
sectioned

Transect in a canal where user profiled too close to the canal walls
Reflection from Side Wall / Debris
Step for Subsectioning
Right-click on Transect Identify new ‘starting’ and
“Transect Subsection” ‘ending’ ensemble
or hit Alt+F8

Lock Files

• Right-click on Measurement file or

“File… Lock” from menu
• Should be used after initial processing
• Prevents accidental change by reviewer

After Qm is
Locked
Summary Report
Most issues noticed at first glance

• Lots of lost and bad ensembles

• No Compass Calibration while using GPS

• No good bins on left edge

• Lost bottom track
