Insomnia
What is valerian?
- Valerian is a perennial plant native to Europe and Asia and now
cultivated

in North America. It has been used as a medicinal herb since ancient times,

has long been recognized as an aid to sleep. You can get it at health food

, although like melatonin.


- The results of some studies suggest that valerian may be useful for

insomnia and other sleep disorders.


-It grows to up to four feet high and has trumpet-shaped flowers.

The roots are used medicinally.

Instructions
● How to Use Valerian

1. The medicinal part of the valerian plant is the dried root.

2.Use valerian as a mild sedative to relieve symptoms of insomnia by taking

150-300mg in tablet form (standard active ingredient 0.8 percent valerenic

acid), about 45 minutes before going to bed. It will help ease you gradually

into sleep if it is used nightly over a period of 2-3 weeks.

3.To make a tea with valerian to produce the same sedative effects, add 2-

3 grams of dried root to one cup of boiling water. Allow to steep for 10-15

minutes then strain and drink while warm. Honey may be added to

enhance the flavor.

Who should not take valerian?
●Women who are pregnant or nursing should not take valerian without

medical advice because the possible risks to the fetus or infant have not

been evaluated.

●Children younger than 3 years old should not take valerian because the

possible risks to children of this age have not been evaluated .

●Individuals taking valerian should be aware of the theoretical possibility

of additive sedative effects from alcohol or sedative drugs, such as

barbiturates and benzodiazepines.
