What Leadership
is not about ?

• Leadership has nothing to do with seniority or one's position in the


hierarchy of a company.
• Leadership has nothing to do with titles.
• Leadership has nothing to do with personal attributes.
• Leadership is not about telling and controlling - It’s about guiding,
mentoring and coaching.
Who is Leader ?
• A person who influences a group of people towards the achievement of a goal.

• Hemphill - Leadership is the behaviour of an individual. Directing the activities of a group towards
shared goal.
• Peter Drucker: “The only definition of a leader is someone who has followers.”
• Bill Gates: “As we look ahead into the next century, leaders will be those who empower others.”

• The idea of leadership moves around 3P’s- Person, People and Purpose.

What distinguishes great leaders from merely good ones?
• Is it IQ or Technical Skills or Determination or Vision only ?

NO
• As per the Daniel Goleman “Emotional Intelligence” is the sine qua
non of leadership.
• He analysed various models of nearly 200 global companies like
British Airways, General Electric, Credit Suisse etc.
• Compared star performer with average ones and found astonishing
results that nearly 80-90% of difference in their profile was attributed
to Emotional Intelligence.
What is Emotional Intelligence ?
• The awareness and ability to manage one’s emotions in a healthy and
productive manner.

• One can manage own impulses, communicate with others effectively,


manage changes and solve problem.

Components of EI – Self-Awareness, Self Regulation, Motivation,


Empathy and Social Skills.
Self-Awareness
• It means having a deep understanding of one’s
emotions, strength, weakness, needs and
drives.

• They are neither overcritical nor unrealistically


hopeful.

• They have thirst for constructive criticism.


Self-Regulation
• The ability to control or redirect disruptive
impulses and moods.

• The propensity to suspend judgement- to think


before acting.

• Openness to change.
Motivation

• A passion to work for reasons that go


beyond money or status.

• A propensity to pursue goals with energy.

Empathy
• The ability to understand the emotional
makeup of other people.

• They have skill in treating people according


to their emotional reactions.
Social Skills

• Proficiency in managing relationships and


building networks.

• An expertise in building and leading teams.


Can emotional intelligence be learned ?
• Scientific inquiry strongly suggests that there is a genetic component of
emotional intelligence.
• Psychological and developmental research indicates that nurture/learning
plays a role as well.
• Practice responding, rather than reacting.
• Create a positive environment.
• Understand what motivates you.
