GANDHINAGAR MASTERPLAN 2026 INTRODUCTION and LOCATION • Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat. • Gandhinagar is located in central Gujarat, Vadodara and located to the north of Ahmedabad. • It is a planned city situated on the Ahmedabad- Vadodara highway, Gandhinagar is the commercial heart of Gujarat and western India. • Gandhinagar is being developed as info city . • AREA: It has an area of 649 km², and a population of 13,34,455(13LAKHS) DENSITY: 660 inhabitants per square kilometre HISTORY AND THE FORMATION OF THE CITY
• Gandhinagar got its identity post
Independence. • In order to pay a tribute to Gandhiji’s contribution in the independence of our country the place of his birth was thus named. • The territories in India were divided and Bombay was divided into two states, Gujarat and Maharashtra. • Ahmedabad was chosen as the state capital but later was shifted to Gandhinagar in 1971. • The city was planned by Chief Architect H.K. Mewada, educated at Cornell University, and his assistant Prakash M Apte Location Map URBAN FORM OF GANDHINAGAR • Gandhinagar is spread over an area of 205 sq.km covering the districts of Gandhinagar, Sabarkantha and Banaskantha. • Gandhinagar is mostly an arid and dry land. • There are wetlands also present in the form of lakes, swamps, etc. • The main rivers of the city are 1. River Sabarmati 2. River Vatrak 3. River Meshvo and 4. River Khari • The main deserts of Gandhinagar are: 1. Thar desert 2. Kutch and 3. Hissar • There is a lake named Adalaj lake at Sector 1 Map CLIMATE CONDITIONS • Gandhinagar has a tropical wet and dry climate with three main seasons: summer, monsoon and winter. • The climate is generally dry and hot outside of the monsoon season • The weather is hot to severely hot from March to June when the maximum temperature stays in the range of 36 to 42 °C and the minimum in the range of 19 to 27 °C . • It is pleasant in the winter days and quite chilling in the night during December to February. The average maximum temperature is around 29 °C , the average minimum is 14 °C , and the climate is extremely dry. • The southwest monsoon brings a humid climate from mid-June to mid-September. The average annual rainfall is around 803.4 mm SHAPE OF URBAN DESIGN • The city is planned on the western bank of the river Sabarmati • The city has been planned in a GRID IRON METHOD • It is a highly structured city and has orders street grid patterns. • It was built by taking inspiration from CHANDIGARH, BHUBANESHWAR. • The development of city first started near the capital complex which is situated in the centre • Villages around the site developed as the residential nodes with rapid transit to CAPITOL COMPLEX at the centre

CHARACTER OF THE CITY • Gandhinagar has 30 sectors which are of 1 km x .75 km each in length and width. • Each sector has a primary school, a secondary school, a higher secondary school, a medical dispensary, a shopping centre and a maintenance office. • Gandhinagar is developed on the neighbourhood concept. • Gandhinagar's streets are numbered from 1-7 • All streets are aligned at 30 deg. n-w and 60 deg. n-e, to avoid direct glare of morning and evening sun while driving • The Gujarat assembly building is in the centre of the city to make it close to all the residents CHARACTER OF THE CITY ORIENTATION OF ROADS • The system consists of a grid (1 km. x 0.75 km.) of motor roads and another grid (1 km. x 0.75 km.) of cycle pedestrian ways superimposed on each other • The main town roads have been so oriented with respect to light and air ventilation of the buildings surrounding it. • The alignment of the distributor road within the sectors is taken in such a way that it facilitates to orientation of the residential quarters in a correct manner. • Practically in all the sectors, nearly 60% of the residential quarters have been correctly oriented with reference to light air and ventilation. ACTIVITY PATTERN • The major activity pattern of the district are : • Work areas • City centre • Shopping, commercial, and warehousing area • Residential areas • Recreation area • Sports centre

Activities and land use Development plan of the city based on activities and population growth GANDHINAGAR MASTERPLAN 2026 • Gandhi Nagar Master Plan 2026 provides the framework for rationalizing the orderly movement of traffic and transportation within the city and defines the area for laying down net-work of various services. • The plan is used for promoting integrated development of the urban centre by rationalizing its pattern of land use and their interrelationship. • Master Plan acts as a tool for determining the infrastructural cost which would be required to make the city sustainable.
