Purpose:
•To proclaim the sovereignty and
independence of the Philippines from
the colonial rule of the Spanish
Empire
– to inspire the people to fight more
zealously against the Spaniards
– lead foreign countries to recognize the
independence of the country

• A perusal of the document can reveal some often
overlooked historical truths about this pertinent
event in Philippine history

• It reveals the GENERAL REVOLUTIONARY

TREATY of PARIS
• It was an agreement signed between Spain and the
US regarding the ownership of the Philippine Islands
and other Spanish colonies in South America. The
agreement ended the short-lived Spanish-American
War. The Treaty was signed on December 10, 1898,
six months after the revolutionary government
declared the Philippine Independence

• The Americans occupied the Philippines immediately


which resulted in the Philippine-American War that
lasted until the earliest years of the 20th century
