M. Sc. Part - II
Aim:
To study the ground flora of Kankeshwar.
Objectives:
Kankeshwar has not received attention from botanical point
of view though being a place of historical importance.
This project was undertaken to bring to notice this ancient,
historical place, which is rich in flora and fauna.
History of Kankeshwar:
• The history of Kankeshwar is that it has a
Shiva temple which is 5000 years old and
pilgrims visit this place in a great no
every Monday. The temple is situated at
a height of about 1200 ft there are about
750 steps to climb to reach to the top of
the temple which is situated at mountain

houses and 35 couple.

Methods And Plan:
• List of plants was first made by referring to previous work done in the area.
• Field work was done by frequent visits to the place every month.
• The field collections included noting down the habit, locality, abundance and flowering
period.
• Plants were collected and pressed on the field itself.
• The camping was done in the temple rest house.
• All important forest rounds were covered.
• Photographs of the plants were taken by me.
• Later on plants were poisoned with mercuric chloride and ethyl alcohol.
• And the specimens were treated as per the instructions in the botanical collector’s
manual (H. Santapau).
• All the specimens were identified and checked for accuracy with the help of Blatter
herbarium specimens.
• Information was adopted from the Flora of Maharastra (M.R. Almeida)

Result :
A total of 232 species representing 59 families & 181 genera were listed in this work.
Conclusion:
• The above result shows that the vegetation of the area is very rich and highly
diversified.
• The above study was conducted for seven months only in spite of such a short
duration, the number of species recorded in this report is very high. This shows the
richness in the vegetation in the area and this underlines the need to take up this and
adjacent area for thorough investigation.
• The above information gathered under the study can be utilized to increase the eco-
history tourism, hereby generating funds for the locals.
• But due to human interference, the flora and fauna are immensely affected. As the
area is often visited by pilgrims and is disturbed by pollution and wood cutting and
animal grazing. All these factors have resulted in the decrease of natural flora of
Kankeshwar.
