Armored Cable Wires
Applications

• Building, Engineered, Railway, Plant construction, school, Hospital, Underground, etc.

• Exposed to mechanical or environmental damage under normal operating conditions
• Industrial plants, commercial buildings, processing plants and central and substation utility applications
C. Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages
Temperature resistance of Armored cable
• approximately 6000C and 10000C respectively (steel is approximately 15000 C)
• steel armoring goes a long way in protecting the electrical carrying components against extreme temperatures.

Advanced mechanical properties of Armored Power Cable

• meant to be used over long distances
Electromagnetic Interference (EMI)
• insulating the transmission components from emitting and being affected by the interference

Disadvantages
• The freshly cut edges are difficult to work with and very sharp.
• New wires cannot be run through it.
• It is expensive, and a new cutting tool must be bought for each new size.
Sheathed Non-metallic Cable
A. Kinds:

NM-B- interior (w,y,o) UF-B cable- exterior, underground (gray)

B. Applications
• Running residential electrical wiring in hidden locations, within walls and in floor and ceiling cavities.

C. Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages
• Available in several sizes
• Economical
• Heat & fire resistant
Disadvantages:
• Used mostly in residential dwellings; limited to two storey
• Not resilient to rodent and external attacks
Metal Clad Cable
A. Kinds

Copper Aluminum

B. Applications
• service-entrance conductors, branch circuits and feeder wiring-services for power, lighting, control and signal
circuits.
• Can be Outdoors, wet locations, Direct burial, Encased in concrete.

C. Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages
• Can be used in outdoors/hazardous applications.
• Fit for any type of electrical needs, from home use to warehouses, hotels, offices, and even stadiums and
industrial plants. (2000 kcmil)
• Rodent and termite resistant due to its aluminum armor
• Eliminates the need for expensive tools such as pipe cutter, threader, and bender due to its built-in Al strip
armoring
Disadvantages:
• heavy weight and flexibility
Mineral Insulated
A. Kinds

outer material sheath: stainless steel, alloy 825, inconel, etc

B. Applications
• Used in critical fire protection applications such as alarm circuits, fire pumps, and smoke control systems
• Instrumentation for nuclear reactors and nuclear physics apparatus

C. Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages
• metal sheath and solid filling of MI cable makes it mechanically robust and resistant to impact
• waterproof and resistant to corrosion
• inherently fire-rated
• inherently fire-rated

Disadvantages
• not suitable for use where it will be subject to vibration or flexing, for example connection to heavy or movable machinery
• minimum bend radius must be observed and the cable must be supported at regular intervals
• only manufactured with ratings up to 1000 volts.
• time and effort consuming installation
• can be severely damaged by ammonia-bearing compounds
• mineral compound is highly moisture absorbent
Shielded Non-metallic Cable

A. Kinds
• Combination shields
• Foil Shields
• Spiral Shields
• Serve Shields
• Tape Shields

B. Applications
• installation in cable trays, raceways or where supported by a messenger wire
• radio/ data communications, security systems
C. Advantages and disadvantages
Advantages
• reduces electrical noise and reduces its impact on signals and also lowers electromagnetic radiation
• protects cable but it can also protect machinery and people as well.
• minimize noise generation, which affects many other systems like radio and data communication.
Disadvantages:
• loops may cause noises
• connector must offer similar ratings as the cable for effective shielding
• required spacing between wires
