• Born on February 18, 1745,
Como, Lombardy Italy. • Italian physicist whose invention of the electric battery provided the first source of continuous current. ALESSANDRO VOLTA
• Physicist , chemist, and
pioneer of electrical science. • Famous for his invention of the “ELECTRIC BATTERY.” EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND • Educated at home by his uncle until twelve years old. • Studied at Benzi seminary until reaching 18 years of age. FAMILY BACKGROUND • Filippo Volta & Donna Maddalena • His family was part of nobility, but not wealthy. INVENTIONS & DISCOVERIES • Invented the first electric battery – which people then called the “voltaic pile” • Was the first person to isolate methane. • Discovered methane mixed with air could be exploded using an electric spark: this is the basis of the internal combustion engine. • Discovered “contact electricity” resulting from contact between different metals. CONTRIBUTION TO MODERN TECHNOLOGY
• In recognition of Alessandro Volta’s contributions to
science, the unit of electric potential is called the volt.
