It's a crutch for "weak" people.
It's for people who like nasal gazing
(they're too into themselves).
It's for those folks who want to get psycho “
analyzed"?
Counseling is none of
these. More percisely...
 Counseling is a conversational process that can be
instrumental in the development of skills that help
students effectively confront and cope with
uncertainties and conflicts
 Counseling helps with problems in living through
an interaction with a trained professional.
 Counseling is largely a voluntary activity whereby
clients must wish to change and collaborate willingly
with the counselor. Early counseling activity in some
cases involves bringing referred clients to this point of
readiness
 Results of counseling can include:
 Insight and understanding of oneself, with greater
self-awareness.
 Changing of one's beliefs and mental models.
 Increased acceptance and appreciation of oneself.
 Increased emotional intelligence.
 Increased ability to control oneself and one's urges.
 Development of skills and abilities that require self-
management
 Improved motivation towards actions that are good for
one's self.
 Understanding of others and why they act as they do.
 Increased appreciation and care for others.
 Improvement in relationships with others.
 Changing of relationship with family, friends and
others.
 Making amends for past negative actions.
Definitions

 A principled relationship characterized by the


application of one or more psychological theories and a
recognized set of communication skills, modified by
experience, intuition and other interpersonal factors, to
clients' intimate concerns, problems or
aspirations. (Feltham and Dryden, 1993)

counselee who needs assistance and the counsellor
is trained and educated to give this assistance”

 Counseling is a unique relationship
in which the Counselor’s job is to
hold up a mirror for the client to see
himself or herself in. We all have
experiences in which we can’t see
things about ourselves without a
mirror.

 It is important because we need to take care of
ourselves both physically and mentally.

 Counseling is a great way to work through problems


such as traumatic life events or mental disorder
 Stress
 Difficulty with major life events or other life stressors
Relationships
 Problems with co-workers or family relationships
 Addictions
 Overeating, drugs, alcohol, sex, shopping, gambling,
or workaholic behaviors
 Emotional issues
 Grief, depression, excessive jealousy, anxiety, phobias,
or panic attacks
 Low self-esteem
 Insecurity, shyness, feelings of worthlessness,
unhappiness with physical looks
 Life changes
 Illness, becoming a parent, career changes, mid-life

Crisis in Relationships:

 Insomnia or excessive sleep.
 Hyperactivity, chronic irritability, or excessive anxiety.
 Sudden withdrawal from social contacts.
Harmful Statements or Behaviors:
 Thinking of suicide or expressing statements of
helplessness or hopelessness.
 Extreme risk-taking behavior.
 Persistent or prolonged unhappiness.
 Health related Issue - If you are suffering from
hypertension, migraine, asthma or skin problems you
may need counseling to maintain good health and
help in healing the pain of your disease.
 Development is an important goal for developing
countries. This goal cannot be achieved without the
growth of human potential. Counseling is one of the
effective means for developing human potential. Yet
counseling has been evolving slowly in developing
countries. Reports show that counseling and guidance
have been started in the schools in some of these
countries; they rarely show that counseling has been
implemented in other settings.
 Motivation Sessions - Whether you are a student,
businessman or a sportsperson you may need
counseling ,it increases your motivation and will
power to succeed.

 Counseling will help by motivating you to deal with


the present crisis. It will provide you solutions and
therapies to cope up with the past and prepare for
future
