ASSIGNMENT 12 LEARNING

RESEARCH THEORISTS
By: Marcus Outlow
THEORIST #1: LEV VYGOTSKY
• Creator of the Sociocultural Learning
Theory - based upon the idea that a
learner's environment plays a pivotal
role in his/her learning development.
• Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) –
The range of skills that are a little bit
more difficult than what a student can
do independently.
• A concept that developed based on
his work was the term scaffolding which
means to change the level of support
to meet the ability of the child. This
term means to help a child that isn’t
quite able to help themselves.
THEORIST #2: B.F. SKINNER
• Creator of the Programmed Instruction
Education Model. As an educational
technique, it is characterized by self-
paced, self-administered instruction,
which is presented in a logical
sequence and with multiple content
repetitions.
• Creator of the idea of Behaviorism. It's
the idea that praise and rewards
positively reinforce a behavior and
encourage kids to continue with it.
Punishments discourage students from
a behavior. Beyond following rules,
there are learning actions we can
reinforce.
THEORIST #3: JEROME BRUNER
• Creator of the Discovery Learning
Model. This model consists of 5 learning
principles; Problem solving, learner
management, integrating and
connecting, information
analysis/interpretation, and
failure/feedback.
• The whole purpose of the model was to
increase creativity, motivation and
active involvement.
SUMMARY
• I think these three theorists came up with content that will help teachers
forever. What they came up with was simple but brilliant at the same time. I
could definitely use these three theories in my future teaching. The one I can
see myself using the most is Lev Vygotsky’s model. I like the idea of helping
kids who aren’t capable of helping themselves. I also love the use of his ZPD
method as well. Having that to measure a student’s abilities is smart. You’ll
know exactly what the student is capable of doing and how to build from
there. Good stuff within his model.
• The most important part of teaching to me is knowing your students and how
they learn best. That will develop the relationship even further between the
student ad teacher. The relationship between the two is crucial to ensure the
student learns best.
