Title/Captions: A Non-Traditional Student’s Journey is the insite
to any aspiring individual who wants to pursue higher education.

Narration: What is the journey of a non-traditional student? The

journey of a non-traditional student can be long and tedious, yet
rewarding at the end. Give me a few minutes and I will express my
journey. I am a part-time student at the University of Houston. I
transferred from San Jacinto Community College to pursue a Bachelors
degree in Human Development and Family Studies.

Narration: I am the mother of three children.
I work full-time and cared for my elderly mother who
passed away in February. During my children’s
developing stages, I continued with one or two classes
each fall, summer and spring term. It was not easy
when you have family pulling for time with you. So a lot
of my studies were done at night. Yes, even when I was
sleepy and wanted to close the books and close my
eyes.

best grades during those years and it cost me a
lowered GPA.

Narration: Setting goals, even just one at a time will go a long

ways. I was determined to complete a goal I set for myself
before leaving high school many many years ago.
With the support of my family I was able to stay in the race of
my journey. So what may take one student four years to
complete, it took me over twenty years.

my daughters. I would not trade that moment for
anything. I knew within they was proud.
