ABN Amro – Best Practice - Automation to capture process utilization

Problem Statement
In ABN AMRO Unix –There was an outage on server SPAL3154 in Dec2015. Some critical applications like
4Sight Application was running on it. The outage occurred because of no Swap memory left for the server to
use. The situation occurred because the newly installed software for asset management was consuming lot
of memory. Due to this, the server was overloaded and crashed.
While working on this issue we found that currently there is no method to capture the swap memory
consuming processes. Hence an automation is required to capture the same so that we can
proactively avoid outage situations and get the actual RCA.
This is a critical issue and can reoccur in future hence the same has to be fixed immediately.

Root Cause Solution Implemented

Why: There is a risk of Server getting crashed? A script is made which will take the TOP Swap
Memory consuming Processes .With the Help
Due to Over utilization of OS resources of this script we can capture the Historic as
well Current Swap Memory Utilization at
Why: Over Utilization of resources? Process level to identify the gaps.
Some software or applications consume lot of resources
as per their need OR sometimes the server is serving more
requests more than it can cater to.
Why: The server gets used more than it can be ?
Sometimes even with enough OS resources, server gets
highly loaded with a number of requests and end up using
all the resources it has.
Why: There are huge number of requests?
