Introduction
From the forebay tank down to the turbine, water is conveyed through
the penstock.
Major Components
1. Forebay
2. Penstock valve
3. Vent Pipe
4. Support Pier
5. Anchors
6. Drain Valve
7. Bends
8. Thrust Block
Components of Penstock
Material Used for Construction
Mild Steel
UPVC (unplasticied polyvinyl chloride)
HDPE (high density polyethylene)
Ductile Iron
Prestressed Concrete
GRP (glass reinforced plastic)
Important factors to be considered when
selecting material
Design Pressure
Surface Roughness
Weight of Material
Ease of Transportation
Method of Jointing
Cost of Material
Design Flow Chart for Penstock Design
Constraints in Deciding Diameter
Price
Head Loss
Compromise:
1. Minimum cost with increased head loss
2. Minimum head loss with increased cost of material
Major Contributions to Head loss
Compromise:
Minimum cost (loss of strength)
Maximum Strength (loss of economy)
Calculation of wall thickness
Wall should be thick enough to withstand the maximum water
withstand the maximum water pressure.
Maximum pressure = static + surge
Surge pressure: Worst possible case (instantaneous closure of
valve)

V = flow velocity
C = Velocity of pressure wave

D = diameter of pipe
t = wall thickness
E = young's modulus of elasticity
K = Bulk modulus of water
p = density of water
𝑡𝑚𝑖𝑛 = 𝑝𝑔ℎ𝑚𝑎𝑥 𝐷/(2 Ϭ 𝑇 /S)
Ϭ 𝑇 = ultimate tensile strength
S = safety factor typically 3
Calculation of wall thickness
Procedure: this is an iterative process
1. Estimate t
2. Calculate C, ℎ𝑚𝑎𝑥 , 𝑡𝑚𝑖𝑛
3. Compare t with 𝑡𝑚𝑖𝑛
4. If t < 𝑡𝑚𝑖𝑛 increase t
5. If t > 𝑡𝑚𝑖𝑛 reduce t close to 𝑡𝑚𝑖𝑛
6. Repeat steps 2 and 3
7. Stop when t = 𝑡𝑚𝑖𝑛
Calculation of penstock wall
Thickness
Now we will solve the previous given problem
Let us select " t " as 5 mm,
D = 380 mm (from previous slide 13)
Density of water = 9810 KN/m3
Bulk Modulus of water = 2.15 GN/m3
Young's Modulus of Elasticity = 200 GPa
Ultimate tensile strength of pipe = 490 MPa
Sample Calculations
C = 1/(1000*((1/2.15*10^9)+0.38/(200*10^9*0.05)))^0.5 =1088.93 m/s
