Hardware
a term which refers to the physical
elements of a computer; the
machinery or the electronics in a
computer.
Three components of a basic
computer:
1. Input device (Input unit)
2. CPU (Central Processing Unit) /
Storage (Storage Unit)
3. Output device (Output unit)

Input Device
Input Devices (Input
Unit)

Keyboard
- is the piece of computer hardware
used to input text, characters, and other
commands into a computer or similar
device.
Input Devices (Input
Unit)
Mouse
- sometimes called a
pointer, is a hand-
operated input device
used to manipulate
objects on a computer
screen.
Input Devices (Input
Unit)
Joystick
- is a cursor control
used in computer
games and assistive
technology .
Input Devices (Input
Unit)
Webcam
- is a digital
camera that's
connected to a
computer.
Input Devices (Input
Unit)
Light pen
- an input device
that utilizes a light-
sensitive detector to
select objects on a
display screen.
Input Devices (Input
Unit)
Optical scanner
- these devices are used for automatic data
collection. The devices of this category
completely eliminate manual input of data.
Input Devices (Input
Unit)
Touch screen
- touch panel
displays and pads
are now being
offered as

keyboard.
Input Devices (Input
Unit)
Trackball
- a pointing
device, is a mouse
lying on its back.
Input Devices (Input
Unit)

Optical/Magnetic Scanner
- is an input device using light beams to
scan and digitally convert images, codes,
text or objects as two-dimensional (2D)
digital files and sends them to computers
and fax machines.
CPU (Central Processing Unit)
/ Storage (Storage Unit)
CPU (Central Processing Unit)
- a central processor or main processor,
is the electronic circuitry within a
computer that carries out the instructions
of a computer program by performing the
basic arithmetic, logic, controlling, and
input/output (I/O) operations specified by
the instructions.
Storage (Storage
Unit)
Four types of storage device:
1. Primary Storage
2. Secondary Storage
3. Tertiary Storage
4. Offline Storage
1. Primary Storage

referred to as internal memory, main

memory, main storage, and primary
memory.
Examples of Primary
Storage Device

RAM (Random Access Memory)

- is a hardware device that allows
information to be stored and retrieved on
a computer.
Examples of Primary
Storage Device
Cache
- is a high-speed
access area that can
be a reserved
section of main
memory or on a
storage device.
2. Secondary
Storage

is a non-volatile device that holds

data until it is deleted or overwritten.
Example of Secondary
Storage Hard Drive
- abbreviated as
hard drive, HD, or
HDD, is a non-
volatile memory
hardware device that
permanently stores
and retrieves data on
a computer.
3. Tertiary Storage
is a level below secondary storage.
Typically, it involves a robotic
mechanism which will mount (insert)
and dismount removable mass storage
media into a storage device according
to the system's demands; such data
are often copied to secondary storage
before use.
Examples of Tertiary
Storage

Floppy Disk
- also known as a floppy, diskette, or simply
disk, is a type of disk storage composed of a
disk of thin and flexible magnetic storage
medium, sealed in a rectangular plastic
enclosure lined with fabric that removes dust
particles.
Examples of Tertiary
Storage
CD-ROM’s
- is a pre-pressed
optical compact disc
that contains data. It
is also referred as
read only memory.
4. Offline Storage
refers to any Storage Device medium
that must be physically inserted into a
system every time a users wants to
access or edit data. Offline storage
can be any type of internal or external
storage that can easily be removed
from the computer. Offline storage is
also known as removable storage.
Examples of Offline
Storage

Floppy Disk
- also known as a floppy, diskette, or simply
disk, is a type of disk storage composed of
a disk of thin and flexible magnetic storage
medium, sealed in a rectangular plastic
enclosure lined with fabric that removes
dust particles.
Examples of Offline
Storage
Compact Disc
- to store and play
only sound
recordings (CD-
DA) but was later
adapted for
storage of data
(CD-ROM).
Examples of Offline
Storage
USB Sticks or Flash Drive
- is a data storage device
that includes flash memory
with an integrated USB
interface. It is typically
removable.
Examples of Offline
Storage

Sound card
- the one who controls the output of
sound signals, enabling devices like
speakers and headphones to work.
Examples of Offline
Storage
Video card
- is an expansion
card that slots into
the motherboard.
Output Devices (Output
Unit)
Printer
- a machine for printing text or pictures
onto paper, especially one linked to a
computer.
Output Devices (Output
Unit)

Monitor
- is the piece of computer hardware
that displays the video and graphics
information generated by the computer
through the video card.
Output Devices (Output
Unit)
Audio speaker
- hardware devices
that transform the
signal from the
computer's sound
card into audio.
Output Devices (Output
Unit)
Headphones
- also known as
earphones, allow you
to listen to audio
without disrupting
other people in the
vicinity.
Output Devices (Output
Unit)
Projector
- this output device "projects"
computer images onto a wall or
screen.
Output Devices (Output
Unit)
GPS (Global
Positioning System)
- uses a network of
satellites to provide
information, which
can then be used to
calculate the location
of a specific device
Output Devices (Output
Unit)
Braille reader
- is a peripheral device that enables a
blind person to read text displayed on
a computer monitor.
Output Devices (Output
Unit) Plotter
- similar type of
hardware device
to a printer.
Plotters use
writing tools, such
as pen, pencil,
marker, to draw
lines.
