RELATED LITERATURE REVIEW AND
THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK
 The flipped classroom is a teaching and learning activity where students learn the material by watching
the learning video outside the classroom and doing an activity in the classroom.
 Halili and Zainuddin (2015) note that flipped classroom is an element of blended learning, which is
defined as teaching and learning activities that combine face-to-face activities with online learning.
 The study of the flipped classroom is based on Bloom's theory and has six levels of learning from the
lowest level to the highest level, these are:
1. Remembering
2. Understanding
3. Applying
4. Analyzing
5. Evaluating
6. Creating
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY AND RESEARCH
QUESTIONS
 This activity aims to identify what is often applied in methodologies, areas of
studies, technology tools, most commonly used keywords, work of cited authors,
the impact of student's learning, and challenges.
METHODOLOGY FOR RESEARCH DESIGN

 Research is carried out through a long process and may require researchers to
follow certain steps to obtain valid research information.
 There are 4 steps to be followed.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGIES EMPLOYED
IN FLIPPED CLASSROOM RESEARCH
 This analysis found that the methodology most frequently used
in flipped classroom research was a mixed method (quantitative
and qualitative).
 Examples of instruments for collecting data such as tests,
questionnaires, documents, and interviews.
 For example a researcher named McLaughlin et al (2013) used a
survey and asked for a broad explanation.
 Flipped classroom vs. traditional classroom ( Beapler et
al.,2014)

Survey (Tune et al., 2013)

However, in this analysis, the authors did not find the

application of a qualitative approach such as using a single
instrument interview, focus group discussion, or observation.
AREA OF STUDIES IN THE FLIPPED
CLASSROOM
There were many areas of study where the flipped classroom had been implemented. This study had been implemented in
various areas of study.

Variations in flipped classroom learning include :

1) Science, and social courses, such as information system ( Davies et al., 2013)
2) Chemistry ( Baepler et.al., 2014)
3) Algebra ( Love et.al., 2014)
4) Economics ( Roach, 2014)
5) Engineering, Sociology, humanities ( Kim et.al., 2014)
6) Integrated humanities ( Kong., 2014)
7) Physiology ( Talley & Scherer, 2013)
8) Statistics ( Touchton, 2015)
9) Public health ( Simpson & Richards, 2015)
10) Calculus ( McGivney-Burelle & Xue, 2013)
11) Science, technology, engineering or mathematics ( STEM; McLaughlin et.al., 2014)
12) Business ( Warner et.al., 2014)
13) English language ( Hung, 2015)
TECHNOLOGY TOOL OR ONLINE PLATFORMS
USED IN THE FLIPPED CLASSROOM

In implementing approved flipped classroom , there are many of

technological variations such as Wikis and Blogs that can be applied
outside of the classroom and used for collaboration to solve problems or
exchange ideas. This platform can be used to share text, images, videos
for other users while studying distance.
KEYWORDS INDICATED

 Researchers need an appropriate keywords so their journal can be identified and cited
rapidly.
 There are total 81 keywords from 20 journals.
 There are 7 most searched keywords for Flipped Classroom research. These are :
1. Flipped classroom
2. Active learning
3. Blended learning
4. Flipped learning
5. Technology integration
6. Pedagogical issues
7. E-learning
MOST CITED REFERENCES

 Researchers found 605 references in the 20 journals they analyzed.

 The most highly cited references was book titled ‘Flip Your Classroom, Reach
Every Student in Every Class Every Day’ by Bergmann and Sams (2012)
IMPACTS ON STUDENTS’
LEARNING
STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT

 The goal of flipped classroom is to make students

enhance their achievement learning by focusing class
time activities.
STUDENTS MOTIVATION

 Flipped classroom has significant impact on students’ motivation

 There are two kinds of motivation :
1. Intrinsic motivation : from within yourself (fun, interesting, enjoyable)
2. Extrinsic motivation : from outside influences (to achieve a reward, to
avoid punishment)
 Flipped classroom approach to satisfy students’ needs.
STUDENTS’ ENGAGEMENT

Students can enhance their engagement in

classroom activity, participate in discussions,
exchange ideas, and solve problems with their
peers (McLaughlin et al., 2013)
STUDENTS’ INTERACTION

 Students’ interaction refers to students’ communication with all the elements in

the learning environment including the instructor, students, and content.
 Hung (2015) reported that 75 students (64%) in flipped learning class increased
their interactions with the instructor and classmates.
DISCUSSION, CONCLUSION, AND FUTURE
IMPLICATION
 The flipped classroom benefited students academically and motivationally
 Coherence with the theory of Bloom’s revised taxonomy for cognitive domain
(Bloom, 1969)
 Some challenge found in applying the flipped classroom
 Future studies may not only focus on outside class activities, but also in-class
activities
